NEO4ALL/AES alpha-preview coming soon !

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

NEO4ALL/AES alpha-preview coming soon !

Mon 28 Nov 2005, 11:59 AMby chui
NEO4ALL/AES is a NEO4ALL fork using MMU for load large NEOGEO home console roms.
Yesterday, Fox68k and me tested first playable pre-alpha version and Metal Slug X (64MB rom) is very playable !!!! Theoretically, 298 games will be supported.
A few days, i hope release a alpha-preview for testing everybody.

So basically we'll be able to dump a bunch of AES/MVS ROMs on a disc with the emulator and play to our hearts delight? Any chance with games like Metal Slug 3 that really get up there in terms of size?

Does anyone here know how they're using the MMU to achieve this with such large ROMs? And why hasn't anyone managed to do it before...or even thought of it?

Should this technique be translatable to other systems such as the CPS2?

the mmu doesn't have to be used at all. I was going to work off a system of queues, where all different files (or possibly even files but split into fixed sized chuncks) would be set into a queue that represents what is loaded into ram. this basically works like that. every attempt to access a part of the rom would load that into memory, if it isn't already loaded. This of course only works if the games only access a small amount of of the game's total data at a time. there are certain rom chips used by the neogeo that stripe data over multiple roms, and there is absolutely no garuntee that it will work at all, and not just thrash the CD rom by re-loading multiple files over and over.

basically, systems like this can be used to make emulation of systems with any rom size possible, but the chance that they'd work properly is completely based on the individual game.

I hope they can get to work Metal Slug X, 3 (if it isn't too much to ask :P ), and both Shock Troopers. Those are the "big" games I'm most interested in.

read my post above. you basically only have the files, or portions of files that are being used at the time stored in the ram, instead of the entire game. of course there are some games that will require too much to be able to be readily accessable, so it will not ALWAYS work.

Are certain games listed multiple times by accident or design?

KoF 2003, Kof 2002, Puzzle De Pon R, etc.

Yes, what I was commenting on was the fact that they were listed multiple times.

I think this just became my most anticipated emulator, if you can get Metal Slug 3 running on the Dreamcast you'll be a GOD.

Maybe the list was like a TOSEC sort of thing where there are multiple but different versions of the same game?

Is MMU a programming model or is it actual hardware in the dreamcast itself that is being utilized? I would really like to learn how to use this for read-only stuff in future projects of mine.

the MMU is a part of the SH4. it's main use is to either re-map physical addresses easily, or map in virtual addresses up to 512mb that can be tied to fucntions.

In theory you could use it to lets say remap all the DC's memory addresses to new addresses that are used by the targat emulated system. in the kos examples they have a relatively silly example where they remap 0 to be the framebuffer then send stuff to it. so you can go "memcpy(NULL, buffer, 640x480x2);" and it would put the buffer to the framebuffer.

The one thing I don't know is how this would interact with the functions of kos, I'm fairly sure it would just destroy them, so you would either have to pick unmapped areas of the DC's mem map, or maybe the priviledged mode that kos runs in protects it =P.

Imagine instead of having a cpu core take read and write memory functions and different ram and rom buffers just having it raw-ly read and write to specified dc memory addresses instead of going through switches and whatnot, it has the SH-4's hardware do it all for you.

Of course I could be horribly misunderstanding how it works, but simply from reading the sh programming manual and kos' mmu thinger.
