Dream On Magazine needs a name change: need name suggestions

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Dream On Magazine needs a name change: need name suggestions

Post by MetaFox »

I am just about ready to release Dream On Magazine, but I want to gauge which route to go about selling the magazine. Professional printing is expensive, so I'm going to do a cheaper, less profesional print run if demand isn't high.

Please, only state that you are going to buy the magazine if you really are.

Thanks.

P.S.: As I know this will affect some of your intentions to buy the magazine. Yes, it will include a pressed demo CD.

I'd like to say, that u should aim for professional quality and not thinking about the cheaper solution of doing it at a "cheaper, less professional" way at all:

I am sure that sites like this and also http://www.DCEmu.co.uk, http://www.DCEvolution.net and http://www.Dreamcast-Scene.com will support you in any way they can when it comes to the actual distribution!

It's uber expensive. If I'm not selling at least 350 of these, I'm not going to have it professionally done.

At $4.95 for 250 copies professionally printed + CD, I'm just barely making my money back.

And believe me, that's already the cheapest I can get it. It's no frills yet still professional with as much quality cutbacks I can make.

At four dollars I'd pick one up to help the cause.

I bought all of the Bleems to support Rand and haven't even played them aside from GT2 for a few minutes.

In order to reduce the amount of orders needed, I've decided to raise the price to $5. This means only 250 orders are needed to break even - and it's still reasonably priced compared to other magazines with CDs bundled and other non-ad supported magazines.

Yeah show your support. allways a problem in a scene like this were every thing is free for people to pay for any thing. Use to every thing being free. maybe some features of it and the articles written might get some more people to buy it.

Warmachine keeps asking what is it and most times he is a the normal public.

It's a print magazine for the Sega Dreamcast. It features homebrew Dreamcast games, interviews, and reviews and previews of commercial homebrew and japanese commercial games.

The biggest draw is obviously the demo CD, which will contain Beneath a Steel Sky in the first issue. Future issues (if there are any, depending on demand) will include homebrew compilations using a menuing system that I'm working on for the magazine (but will release for public consumption later), and other discs of freeware games if warranted.

I also plan on working out a pay-to-play system and talking with companies. If the magazine takes off, we can see a system in place (like PCGamer with Quake and Monkey Island 1/2, etc. a few years back), where the user connects to a server over the internet via BBA or modem, and pays a one time fee, which saves a code to the VMU, which unlocks a game on the disc for play. This can be used for the previously mentioned games via the Quake port or ScummVM if the original developers are interested. Games that were previously unreleased (PBA Bowling, Half Life, Propeller Arena) could also finally be released legally through this system if the companies are willing.

The biggest draw to this is that Dan Potter's idea for shareware could be realized for this system. Coders can give me their games, and I'll encode them on the disc. Each game can be sold for as little as $1 and up, as the cost is nothing to them or me as the magazine cost covers the disc.

Again, the future of all of this really depends on you all. This is just the first step.

I'll ship worldwide. But the shipping costs will depend on the amount of interested buyers. I've never been in this for profit, so if there are a good amount of people interested, I'll ship the magazine for free worldwide. Otherwise, if the demand is low (as I said at 250 orders I'm just barely breaking even), then the buyer will pay for shipping charges.

:o Great to see so much enthusiasm in the scene :!:

Would you please add an Atomiswave petition form (for subscribing) to the 1st issue?
