Chanka Released

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Chanka Released

Post by WRAGGSTER »

Chanka the very highly anticipated Dreamcast Emulator for Windows has been released. :)

The Emulator itself comes in 3 flavours, a normal alpha, new gfx and a capcom hack download.

Info from the official ( http://www.chanka.org/ ) Site

Chankast is an advanced SEGA DREAMCAST emulator for x86 platforms.

This project started 3 months ago, it's a joint venture between baktery, unai and garrofi. It hasn't been easy, a lot of hours and headaches, but we think it's time to release an alpha version. We hope you will be surprise, you can play commercial games at a decent speed with a 2ghz CPU. Chankast is a very fast emulator with no hle parts.

We haven't done this emulator to promote piracy, it's a tribute to the great DC.

The emulator is far from perfect, expect new releases with more speed, better graphics, better sound, and more compatibility :)</BLOCKQUOTE>

...Hopefully, having a more "complete" DC emu will drastically help with homebrew development, saving on downtime (with coder's cable uploads) or wasted CD-Rs.

I've found information on the internet that says you can use dc-tool to extract your own BIOS using a coder's cable. It says to use the following command line, but it isn't working for me:

Code: Select all

dc-tool -d bios.bin -a 0x0 -s 0x200000
I don't know if I'm doing this right or not, because I've never used the softwrae before, but it creates a blank file and the command line displays the following:

Code: Select all

Console enabled
Download 2097152 bytes at <0x0> to <bios.bin>
_
And it just stays there, with the little line flashing. Anyone got any advice?

It won't run images, so the idea of creating test isos with SBI and testing them before burning is out of the question. Unless it likes Daemon Tools, which will just spur further questions on operating it and wether or not it actually sees anything it cannot see on the IDE bus.

here is a tool to dump your DC BIOS with a coder cable/bba.
thanks BlackAura for the example.

launch the elf with dc-tool and follow the instructions.
the dump will be saved under /pc/dc_bios.bin, which means in your PC root directory.

Hang on a minute - I forgot I should be using DCLoad instead of the usual serial slave .

Well, I dumped my bios and got Chanka to run the bios but it won't run any of my CDs. Anyone got this far? Also, I always have to configure the time when I start it even though there appears to be a dc_flash.bin file where I would assume that would be saved at. It's pretty cool to see the bios running though.

nope, i didnt succes to launch anything so far, though im pretty sure the dump is good.

i also used a VM dump made with VMU Tool and it emulates it correctly in the filemanager.

the internal clock seems wrong though, the minutes are increasing every second.

oh and about the time it does that for me too, everytime i try to boot a game it shows the red swirl, then ask me for the date and time 2 times in a row and finally goes back to the boot menu.

It does exactly the same thing for me. Of course, everything I tried was homebrew. I didn't try an actual commercial game yet. I never bought one in my life actually. I only bought my Dreamcast for emulation and homebrew.

i think it is due to the missing flash dump.
im improving my dumper so it also dumps the flash.

after i used my dumped flash i got the blue swirl, then it seemed it tried to boot the game, and chanka crashed. but that may be an hardware issue.

note that it cant boot commercial games on gd, the emu is made to run games from selfboot cd-r.
hopefully the bios/flash needed will force people to own a DC, at least before some other people spread the illegal bios/flash files.

Grrr... I dumped my BIOS with the method mentioned in the 5th post in this thread months ago. Unfortunately, chanka doesn't want to start up with it. :-(
(The Data appears to be valid, there's a SEGA KATANA string in the bios)
I guess I need to hook my DC back up and dump it again.

Oh well. Thanks for releasing the dumping tool, speud. Edit: Woo.. Works now with the new dump. Thanks again.... Well, I'm stuck in the BIOS like everyone else. But I get 82fps from it! :-)

Yeah, When I tried that method Chankast would just freeze on me trying to boot. Now with the BIOS dumped using the speud's tool no games will boot and I constantly get that time/date screen.

Yeah, spued, that would be cool if you could modify your dumper to also dump the flash.
