DCDivx and store bought Divx movies?

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

DCDivx and store bought Divx movies?

Post by Heatshiver »

Will the Divx movies that you used to be able to buy from stores work with DCDivx? If so, how? Thanks.

I believe that the divx you are referring to, is completely different then the free divx codec. I'm not 100% though.

I'm talking about the short-lived Divx movies sold in stores, that became absurdly cheap because DVDs came out.

Store bought "DivX" movies are not compatible in any way with the Dreamcast. They are (basically) a DVD that is supposed to only be playable for a certain number of times on any particular DVD player. However, that technology never took off, so now you can find the DivX DVDs in some stores that still have them, very cheap. I would stay away from them, unless you've got some higher purpose in mind.

No, the company that made the DIVX codec took the name DIVX from the format you are talking about that were sold at Circuity City, they used the name as a joke, the 2 products have nothing in common other than that.
