What's the biggest rom a DC can play?

Post by bdisagree » Wed Jan 09, 2002 3:53 pm

Anyone know the largest file size wise of ROM, a Dreamcast can play (decently)? I'm sure this has probably been spoken of a million times, but for us who don't know including myself, if anyone could say again, that'd be great.

Thanks.

I know for Segagen, anything bigger than three or four megs will be a problem. Does this help?

Also, any vector-based games have a hard time running in Mamed.

Bleemcast can play Tekken3 (not exactly a rom) which is 600mb. :wink:
As for MameD, anything over 4mb seems to be too big.

Thanks for the notes guys, I guess Neo Geo guys would have a hard time pumping the electricity into the dreamcast then, that's too bad...

Sigh.

Yeah, well if you think about it the dreamcast can play 1 gb roms since all dc games are put on a disc which is 1 gb.

CD != ROM

1gb games on CD are MADE TO RUN FROM CD. They are made with the consideration that there is only 16mb of RAM, but 1GB of CD that is best read sequentally.

ROMs always rely on the fact that they WILL FIT IN RAM, and that they will BE in RAM when executing.. they have no concept of loading or anything like that, they're actually supposed to be burned into a ROM (but RAM is fine for emu purposes).
