What a bunch of ungrateful jerks...

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

What a bunch of ungrateful jerks...

Post by Rambozo » Sun Dec 29, 2002 5:36 pm

So at my school, there's a lounge with a TV for watching shows between classes. Most of the time, people bring their consoles and play some games with their buds. In fact, thanks to the 2K2/2K3 series, people still bring mostly their Dreamcasts.

So I bring a disc with some damn good homebrew on it (The epitech demos, the Marathon and Quake ports, Trilinear's stuff like Echo and Rocket Racer...)

I pop it in to show some buds, (casual gamers who own only PS2s) and tell them it's homebrew. They don't understand. I carefully explain what that means. They finally grasp the "It's free" part, and get excited. But when they see the games in action, they're like "Dude, the graphics suck". I explain to them that the games are fun anyways (Especially DrxLax or whatever, and Catch the Chicken from the epitech bundle) but they're unreceptive. "Why can't they make games that are as good as in stores", they ask.

I tell them it's free. You get what you pay for. The fun of homebrew is not getting free games, it's being able to sample other peoples' work on your own console, playing each new version, noticing improvements, and enjoying new games every week.

But again, they apparently expect to not only get FREE homebrew games, but they expect them to be of the same quality as the last generation of Dreamcast titles.

In conclusion, casual gamers are stupid.

Just tell them that instead of using a 20,000 dev kit from Sony and having a team of 100 devs it was made by one person using dev tools made and released for free by another dedicated person.

That 3D Space Invaders game was good. Wish it had been finished and made more into a game. That would really be something to play every once in awhile. Yea some people are just stupid like that though. I remember putting Genecyst on a school computer back around 97 and people dissed it cause it didn't have perfect sound.

A pc genesis emulator.
If you think typing 'make' is hard, forget coding.
If you can't figure out the commands to DC-Tool, forget coding.
If you think coding is as easy as typing printf("Hello World\n"); , shoot yourself.

Homebrew:
  • Cost to you: Close to $0
Cost to make: Close to $0
Made by one or two guys
    In their free time
    Usually programmers, not artists
Done as a hobby, not a profession
    Using hacked-together freeware devkits
Done over maybe a few months
Versus Commercial:
  • Cost to you: $30?
    Cost to make: Several million
Make by a team of hundereds
    Who are being paid
    And are all specialists
    Using official development kits
Done over a couple of years
And we're expected to produce stuff of the same quality? Idiots...

The problem with a lot of casual (and some younger) games is that they don't appreciate how hard it is to do this sort of stuff, how much effort and time it takes, and how talented these people are, and they don't appreciate that it's all FREE! My youngest brother (14) is like that, even with stuff that I programmed.

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to make them understand, and unless it's pretty, or perfect, they won't touch it. Oh well, it's their loss.

YOU see they did not grow up on the wonderfull c64 or amiga nes etc they grew up on a PSX and,,,,,,,, To these brats

If it looks worst then any think, they have seen on a psx then its crap

They have no' idea what a good game is or real fun from games .

When grafix meant nothing and gameplay sold a game

I love to have more poeple like me that remeber this..... but if you want to make a homebrew game that make a kid go wow its going to have to be shallow really good grafix .. and that means ' A tested idea that has been done 2000000 million times like a racing car game or a fighting game that looks better then or up to tekken3 on the psx . even then they say looks kinda crap....

Please your self not others we all know the DC scene is the best homebrew scene ever its now going past what i remeber for the c64 i never had many things that were as nice as what ive done now .....

txt adventures and a arcade game called city bomber which was written in basic and used asm routines

it had SFX lol

back then i showed my home brew game to nes owners guess what they told me the grafix look crap and is that all the c64 can do will no it was not ITS a bit like the same thing as BA said even then i could not do a game like ocean software they spent upto 6 months on a game.....

really take away the grafix on most games now and there very shallow!

like the crap that seems to be around now

We probably just need to make a video about homebrew, etc ... what it's about mainly. Then again, naw ... people just need to respect what can be done freely, I know some people that are "disrespectful jerks" as well, but there's nothing I can do about it to make them change their view.

I usually don't bother to show off my knowledge of the homebrew scene because of this. Usually I'll just mess with people's heads by making selfboot auto-rom-loading nester discs saying Super Mario Bros was indeed release for the DC...
It's thinking...

They own PS2's, that's your problem.

I think the reason people don't have an awful lot or respect for homebrew gamage is simply because so few games are in a truly finished state. Besides the breakout clone, echo's adventure, and I suppose fof ( haven't played it), so dc games are rally complete enough to get into. Take rocket racers, for example. Great idea, decent enough graphics, but no 2 player mode or anything. It's like we get the first taste and them the devver just quits.
Need a Treamcast, Dreamcast modchip, HUGE DC memory card, ASCII-like DC fighter pad, or Saturn Gameshark with tons of backup memory? PM me.

Well I think most of the games should be called demos and not games

FOF is very complete and as good as dance dance R DDR when dreamscome true version

it is nicer then that verison on the psx but its a game only fans of that type of games can play

I think when we give up on a game or such we need to put out the source at lest then it' be worked on or not but its there so it can be finshed

TO make a good homebrew game you need a game idea that does not take super 3d grafix even if it was 3D chess or checkers thats some think do able and the dc could do it well with mp3 music video etc it has to be complete

as the half done games should be called tec demos not games is were the problem some times is

i think the art fourm should be used to help programers to get better grafix in there games i asked once for help and did not even get a reply so with out proper grafix i stoped working on it i was working on a myst clone for dc
