The power of DC-Linux?

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

The power of DC-Linux?

Post by Slamoid »

So what is the Hardware equivelent of running Linux on DC? Will I be able to play many games on it? Do you need a mouse to run it? How far can you go with this?

Thanks for the info!

reaper2k was working on an update to it, and I *think* he said he could get Street Fighter 2 running at an acceptable speed through one of the faster MAME ports.

As of now, it is sort of a gimmick, but let's wait and see what they come up with next release.

Linux on the DC works, but it's not that useful. The Linux Kernel occupies nearly all of the available RAM, so there's practically nothing left for your own software. Doom will run (requires 4MB of RAM), but it'll be very slow because of all the overhead introduced by the OS. No matter how fast an OS is, it will never be as fast as running directly on the hardware, or at least very close to it.

It also uses a Framebuffer X-Server .... which is crap, It needs a svga server and PVR drivers .. which would improve speed in any graphical aplication...

And as far as the qnx port .... it will never be released to the public, and if it is .. it's highly illigal.

You need a pro version of QNX (paid for). It includes the SH4 tookit from which he made it...
