Hardware Mod Navigation System (and FAQ's, Tutorials, etc)

Post by Sub Woofer »

Hey, I've decided to compile a list of some of the great tutorials and topics that people have a accomplished (with links to the topics) on this sticky. however it is far from complete, and to complete it I will need your help.

If you feel theres anything else I should add, either PM me or one of the Hardware forum mods, and we should be able to hook you up. The entire forums were deleted by a nameless individual (GRR) and a lot of the great tutorials and pictures are missing, so if you have any, PLEASE repost them or send them to me, they would be a great addition.

Please can other moderators and users add tutorials, topics, information, basically anything that is helpful. Moderators can do this by simply editing and adding stuff to this FAQ, and users can PM me or another moderator to update the information. (also, change the last updated date)

Contents of this FAQ (last updated 1st of January 2003 by Synlor)
(tidied up a little by sixteen-bit, to ease readability 21 June 02)
(single minor fix by TDA 11th of August 2002)

Main Topics

1. Will your Dreamcast play CDRs?
2. What Equipment will I need?
3. Forcing the DC to boot into 60hz or 50hz
4. VMU mods
5. LED Mods
6. Sprucing up your Dreamcast
7.Work in progress mods
8.Repair work
9.Is it possible?
10. Interesting and helpful stuff
11. Where can I buy the components though?

1. WILL YOUR DREAMCAST PLAY CDR'S?

Wondering whether to purchase a dreamcast and wonder if it will play any of the many emulators and homebrew on this site? these topics should help you in what to look for.

This article outlines many of the Dreamcast models, and which ones are known to play/not play CDR's. Aparently the only ones who cannot play CDR's (aka non MIL_CD compatible Dreamcasts) are the Japanese hello kitty and other promotional versions. (but this is not proven.) apparently all the Euro PAL dreamcasts will play MIL-CDs and CDR media. Check this article if your Dreamcast is compatible

http://www.dcemulation.org/article-supported.htm

Apparently, the newer Dreamcasts are able to still play CDR's, if you burn the audio track on the cd last, after the data CD, this topic talks a little bit about it.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3994

2. WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED?

If you want to do any of these mods, then you will need some basic equipment:

Soldering:
At some point or another, you're going to have to make electrical joins-- soldering's where it's at.
A basic iron should be all you need to get started with smaller projects. These can be bought cheaply on their own or as part of larger packs. 15W is usually recommended though 25W will also suffice. For larger projects, a nice low voltage temperature-controlled soldering iron would be a bonus though these are usually expensive.
Removing old solder joins, or parts where you just plain mess up (happens to all of us at sometime) is going to be hard unless you have the right tool for the job. Desolder pumps are cheap and are very useful to have around.
For safety reason, everyone should have a solder stand and ideally some form of safety glasses incase any molten solder starts spitting out at your face. Trust me, you do NOT want hot solder in your eyes.
If you buy the parts seperately, you will need to get a roll of solder. I cannot really advise on which type to get as I use the generic cheap stuff personally.

Wire / Cutting tools:
Obvious items such as screwdrivers, wire cutters and strippers and pliers are essentials for most work and a small multi-tool would be a good addition to any modders toolbox.
A rechargeable "powerdriver" is another useful item to have, though entirely optional.

Electrical tools:
For most work, a really basic DMM (Dig ital MultiMeter) will be all you need for testing Voltages and resistances. These can be obtained for about ?5 UKP from places such as Maplin.

Painting:
You will need:
Krylon Paint (None/Semi-Gloss)
Clear finish
Masking tape.
Use a coat or 2 on the plastic with the Krylon. Then add some clear gloss. Use the masking tape so you don't spray over things you don't want sprayed.

Electrical Tape:
When doing a quick build, and don't feel like soldering, electrical type is the answer. It should only be used as a short-term solution.

Dremel:
The Dremel is a brilliant tool. Versions can go from 20$-100+$. The cheap one is good enough for whatever modding you will have to do.
It isn't always needed, especially if there are screws, but if not, this is deffinatly your tool for the job

Multimeter:
A must have for almost anything. It can measure ohms and voltage, plus several other useful things to know! A digital multimeter is much better then an analog, though are quite a bit more expensive.

3. FORCING DC TO BOOT IN 60HZ AND 50HZ

Do you live in a european country and are constantly annoyed by the poor versions of games from america which are forced to 50hz and you want to boot them at 60hz? or is your TV too old to support the 60hz signal and games dont run very well and you want to force a 50hz signal? Or do you simply want to create a 50/60hz switch? then look no further than here.

In this topic BOB_LORDOFEVIL_2001 explains in this neat tutorial how to create a 50hz/60hz switch.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1776

4. VMU MODS

Dont you always hate how the VMU batteries seem to run out in only a few months? well, maybe a mod for your VMU is the solution, check these out.

First of all, heres a great little topic which features orgasmotron's VMU mod to make it run of a wall power supply

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewto ... r=&start=0

Heres a great tutorial from la_eternal which shows you how to easily mod your VMU to run off AA or AAA batteries, this is a great mod for people who like to play the VMU minigames and movies!

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4623

Heres how Corta2863 added an LED to his VMU that comes on when it is plugged in the controller and the system is on :)

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=11277

Note, there was a mod around awhile back for running a VMU on AA batteries, if anyone can find a tutorial or pictures, please PM me.

5. LED MODS

Whats a LED you ask? well, its the topic of the moment in hardware modification, and they're those little funkly lights that turn on when you turn on your consoles/pc's/dvd players etc. Is one LED on your DC not enough? or do you feel you'd like to have the whole thing light up like a christmas tree? if so, then this is your section.

LED's on the controller? its possible, this topic has TheDumbass explain where you can get power for it. Corta2863 took this a step further and added an LED to his VMU that comes on when its plugged into the controller.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=11277

Looks like U.S. Male is attempting to modify his Dreamcast to have 10 LEDs! he is still in the middle of modifying it, but watch this topic, as he is going to post pictures of it when he is done. The topic also provides some great info on what type/size of LEDS and where to connect them.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4427

Here is a topic by Smoke on an alternative method to change the LED in the Dreamcast. It takes power directly from the PSU

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=13319

LED Mod Screens
I@N's replaced the original orange LED with a nice blue one which really suits the european style DC's, Check this out.
http://www.geocities.com/imhill/bluedc.htm

Midnight Obsidian also did a similar blue LED, but his is a little less bright, you can find his screenshots here
http://members.aol.com/cchamber37/dcled4.jpg

Orgasmatron not only has also replaced his Dreamcast LED with a blue one, but has also replaced the one in his tremor pack. Also his dreamcast has a sleek seethrough black case to boot.

http://orgasmotron.myftpsite.net/dcdiy/ ... lights.jpg

6. SPRUCING UP YOUR DREAMCAST

Sick of the old white Dreamcast? want to put funky colours on all your stuff? cant afford or dont like the replacement Dreamcast cases? well these topics will help you make your Dreamcast not only play awesome games, but look awesome at the same time.

Wanna paint your dreamcast but have no idea what paint to use, or how to do it? this topic by 16 bit miles outlines some of the best ways to paint your dreamcast.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12905

You ever played those hundreds of awesome Arcade games on the Dreamcast from Street Fighter to Crazy Taxi and ever wished that you could own the original Arcade Cabinet? Well, you can do something MUCH better. and actually have a Dreamcast arcade cabinet! Many people have attempted this mod, and there are several different ways to do it, here are some topics and tutorials showing some peoples work.

This is Mameworlds tutorial about converting a standard JAMMA Arcade cabinet into a Dreamcast Arcade machine.

http://www.mameworld.net/pc2jamma/arc_dc1.html

Please if you have pictures or any diagrams of your own Dreamcast Arcade machine please send them to me. (Subwoofer) Thankyou.

This is not really a hardware mod, but its still upgrading your hardware, this Eurogamer article tells you how to get the best experience and quality out of your Dreamcast setup.

http://www.eurogamer.net/content/mostdc

7. HARDWARE MOD WORK IN PROGRESS PROJECTS

Theres some mods out there that are looking to have some great potential, but havent been completed, or they are simply still speculation, these topics discuss them in full.

NiGHTSFTP's Quest to portalize the Dreamcast

You've all seen those awesome portable atari's, playstations and SNES's that were made by that talented bloke, well ever wished something like this was done to a dreamcast? well look no further, as NiGHTSFTP is currently making one on a shoestring budget, wanna see how? check this topic.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2354

Dreamcaster1's quest to portalize the Sega Genesis

We've seen homemade portable Playstations, Atari's and Snes's. But where does Sega's famous console fit in? there was the Nomad handheld device, but that was made by proper companies. Dreamcaster1 has taken it on himself to create a homemade portable Genesis. (aka Megadrive) Good luck!

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3605

8. REPAIR WORK

DC Finally kicked the bucket? ran out of the warranty? threw the controller at it after losing Jet Grind Radio for the 15th time? well, if your into self repair work these topics should help you with some of your problems.

In this topic, shiroh was having a few fan problems with his DC, unfortunately the only way he could fix it was by getting a new fan (compliments of ventress) however, this topic still features loads of info on the DC's fan if yours kicks the bucket sometime.
http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3037

Is your laser nub on the dreamcast off, and scratching your CD's? in this topic, MidnightObsidian and DukeofURL discuss how to fix this problem with the GDRom unit.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3957

This is a great site which has a tutorial which teaches you how to fix your controller triggers if they happen to break at anytime.

http://wso.williams.edu:8000/~aeatonsa/dcfix/

Random Dreamcast resets? all hardcore Dreamcast players seem to get this problem sometime or another, usually cleaning the lens with a Q-tip or a CD Player Cleaning kit does the trick, but if its still resetting perhaps you should take a look at these topics, as there are many causes of the resetting dreamcasts.

This topic by theendisgone has a solution that seems to work for everyone who has tried it so far.
http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3907

This topic by MidnightObsidian explains how bad soldering could be the cause of your Dreamcast randomly resetting.
http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3548

In this topic by GMC, he finds a solution to the random resetting by adjusting the pins inside the dreamcast, it also has a portugese tutorial thanks to Mr Spoon for you portugese people out there.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2007

In this topic Thedumbass explains how he blew the resistors on the control board of the dreamcast (effectively causing the Dreamcasts controllers to not work.) he also explains how he fixed this. If your controllers arent working anymore, you may want to have a read of this topic.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2890

This is another topic which contains a link to a tutorial which tells you what to do if your controller board has blown.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2590

9. IS IT POSSIBLE?

Nothing is impossible.... but will it work? these topics explain whether certain hardware mods are possible or not, and debates these subjects. Just speculation however, none have been attempted.

This topic asks if it is possible to change the Dreamcast's GD Rom drive with a faster CDRom Drive or a DVD Rom, and contains a lot of usefull information about something that will most likely never be attempted.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4164

10. INTERESTING AND HELPFUL STUFF

Other stuff that doesn't really fit into these catergeries, but still is a great read.

This one is great for wannabe coders and Dreamcast devers who need a cable to code for the Dreamcast, but cannot afford or find a decent BBA or coders cable due to the NCAA banning the importing of cables to America (and any other reason you might have.) This tutorial explains how you can build one yourself, using the DC to Neo Geo pocket link cable.

http://mc.pp.se/dc/serifc.html

Here is a GREAT up and coming site run by one of the regulars here in the forum Bob_Lordofevil_2k1, it has screenshots, tutorials links tons of stuff. If your interested in DCMod's, I'd suggest a visit to this site ;)

http://www.dcmod.cjb.net/

Ever wanted to play Nester with a real Nes controller? Now you can. Check out the tutorial on Lartrak's site

http://nes2dc.nklb.net/

A great up and coming hardware mod page, "Hardware Mod's Man" page has a ton of info, great pictures and tutorials for a number of popular Dreamcast mods

http://www.geocities.com/dreamcastmods

TheDumbass has found a very interesting site which is outlined in this topic, which shows many parts of the dreamcast opened and inside (including the early "liquid cooled" models) and even some prototype models. an interesting look, and you can get a good look at the guts of your machine, without actually opening it.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewto ... hlight=vmu

Interesting topic from Chainfist which includes all the hardware forum regulars discussing the rumored Dreamcast 2 and its specs, not much to do with hardware mod, but still a interesting topic.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4177

Ever wanted a VGA box and arent willing to shell out the dough? or are you interested in making a internal Dreamcast VGA Box? all these questions, and many more can be answered in this topic, started by midnight obsidian which has huge amounts of helpful info about the VGA Box.

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1782

MidnightObsidian has posted details of a simple and easy VGA box in the topic below:

http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=16172

Orgasmatrons site, which contains TONS of pics of mods he's attempted, and the inner bits of the Dreamcast.

http://orgasmotron.myftpsite.net/dcdiy/index.htm

one of the hardware forum regulars, PKScary's photo album, this shows a few of the mods he's done, most notably the LED Mod. Check it out!

http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse. ... cted=17841

For those of you who are not that confident with a soldering iron (I know there are some ), here is a detailed guide provided by Everyday Practical Electronics magazine (a magazine which occasionally features circuits submitted by our very own I@N);

http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/solderfaq.htm

As 16-bit Miles pointed out, this site has infor such as video pinouts & circuit diagrams for various controllers:

http://www.gamesx.com

Corta2863's website with a gallery and other mods.

http://sio.midco.net/corta2863

11. WHERE CAN I BUY THE COMPONENTS THOUGH?

Found a mod you want to do, but don't know where to get the parts? Then here are some places that you can buy the various electronic componets required:

http://www.maplin.co.uk - Practically everything the electronics hobbyist could want, although their prices are a bit on the high side.

http://www.esr.co.uk - Much smaller selection, but they have the basics. Their prices are usually 10%-70% lower than Maplin. This is where I got my replacement blue LED for my Dreamcast's power indicator.

http://www.radioshack.com - Similar to Maplin, but based in America.

http://www.lik-sang.com - Get your SCART cables here to hack into VGA leads, also sell other useful stuff like (overpriced) 'gamebit' screwdrivers.

http://www.jameco.com - A place to get just about any IC at a very reasonable price. Much larger selection of ICs compared to Radio Shack.

Special thanks goes to
I@N, Orgasmatron, 16-bit Miles, PKScary, Midnight Obsidian, la_eternal Tom61, ShadowofBob, U.S. Male, DukeofURL, btm4k, TheGatesofBill, Xylene, Everstoned, Ninja, Dreamcaster1, Marvin and MANY others (I know I'm missing a lot) whose helpfull topics and vast knowledges help make our dreamcast something more than just a standard white box.

*UPDATES* 19th Jan - Added VMU AA Battery Tutorial, DC Controller Trigger fix tutorial, U.S. Male's 10 LED project, Orgasmatrons site, Pictures of I@N's, Orgasmatron's and Midnight Obsidian's LED Mods, added the DCMod site, added colors, updated "CDR" bit and added a few articles from webpages.

Thanks,

What I'd like to see most of all is probably some of the tutorials for modifying Snes/PSX/whatever controllers to work on the Dreamcast. There were quite a few around before, but they seem to have been lost.

Also any Dreamcast Arcade projects and stuff like that.

Unfortunately there were a lot MORE lost when the forum was wiped, and when we moved forums.

a lot of these mods like the VMU on AA batteries, Dreamcast Arcade cabinets, console controllers on dreamcast etc all were lost.

Hopefully we can bring a lot of them back and modify this FAQ as it happens.

(I'd really like to hear from Marvin, if he still visits this board.)

I'd like to suggest an addition to the "will my dreamcast play CDrs?" section; As far as I am aware, all the Euro PAL dreamcasts will play MIL-CDs and CDR media. There was a thread on one of the other forums discussing this but I can't remember where exactly.

Excellent FAQ by the way :)

Sure, I'd love to put it on, if you can find it. I didn't see it on my forum search for topics, but it may be there.

I'm afraid I cant write one myself, as I dont have a coders cable, and dont really know anything about one either.

Also, I moved La_eternal's VMU on AA batteries tutorial to its own topic, and linked to it in the FAQ

BOB_LORDOFEVIL_2k, if your reading this, I noticed your great upcoming site at http://www.dcmod.cjb.net/ (added it to the links)

If your interested, I might be able to convice one of the higher-up at DCEmu to get us to host you (or any other DC Mod sites, although yours is the only one I've seen.) If your hosted here, you should be able to use this hardware mod section as your sites forum as well.

I think this would be a great site if we can get a few of the regulars here to work on it and we could have a massive site! full of all the mods that have been attempted here so far.

So what do you think? I personally think its a great idea, but your entitled to your own opinion.
