I zapped myself

Post by Chaniyth » Wed Feb 05, 2003 8:07 pm

Ok so I have my Dreamcast apart (letting the laquer dry) and I plugged in my DC, and then went to plug the modem in, and I guess I grabbed the PSU without thinking (one of the big [ shaped things got on my thumb), and ZAP! It hurt too, and it wouldn't let me go!

I guess I got lucky! :o

Are you a moron by any chance?

It's MORE than 110v probably as those things have huge capacitors.

Probably more like 1100V, or possibly a lot more. A CRT requires a stupidly huge voltage across it to get it to work.

Yeah, but voltage isn't the only factor... Those "Plasma balls" are millions of volts, but it doesn't effect the body because it's a very low amperage or something.

This is serious stuff, I know, but I would laugh if I flew across the room without a running start.

There's that, and the fact that there's a glass ball in the way. If you actually touched the power supply, it would hurt. Electric fences have something like 10,000 Volts, and pretty much no current (amps), and they hurt too.

yes i am a moron

i didnt realize it was still plugged in, as i was in a rush to get done
i'll never forget it.

i believe where i got zapped it was 110volts, becuase it was right next to where the power plug came in. i didnt touch any of the capacitators. for a moment after i got shocked, i thought i was dead, all i saw was white, and nothing else, who knows if anything else happened, i dont remember, becuase i was knocked out.

i know now not to mess with plugged in electronics.

You probably would have gotten zapped wether it were plugged in or not at the time. CRTs will retain a charge for a long time.

Unless you were zapped directly from the power coming off the cord itself.

Remember folks, working on CRTs *CAN* kill you, if you let them, take proper precautions.

Current is the killer , 1 amp is enough to stop the human heart.
High voltage can also kill you but it usually just travels through your body and looks for a way out ( earth ) this is why sometimes you can get a small burn wherever the electricity escapes your body and earths itself.
My mate is a sparky and in one of his safety vids there is this guy that gets hit with 240vac and the electricity comes out of his knee and earthes to the tables metal leg , He was left with a hole above his kneecap about as round as a pencil.
The worst case scenario in my opinion would be to get hit with a high voltage standing next to a metal table that sits at about groin height and if you accidently leant forward just a bit. ZAP! a DOODLE doo. :o

Pointless story of the day:
My grandmother was making cookie batter with a hand mixer when the cord fell out of the mixer (note: not the wall outlet, the mixer) and into the batter. She picked the cord up and licked the batter off, blowing herself across the kitchen. She's ok and all, but pretty funny nonetheless.
