Dreamcast Development IRC channel

Post by MrSiggler »

|darc| wrote:The Dreamcast development channel is located on the Freenode network: irc.freenode.net #dreamcastdev. If you want to know more about IRC, check out this article.

The channel is still active on a very regular daily basis even in 2014. Please be patient, however, although there are always several users in the chat room, they are often away from the computer as members are not always active 24/7. If you have a question, feel free to ask away and someone will eventually respond.

I am a bit paranoid about going on IRC because anybody can see my IP address/hostname etc...Is there anyway to block people from seeing my info?

Well, on the freenode network everything is visible by default. You could ask for cloaking in the #freenode channel, but they'll only approve it if you have a very good reason.

Why are you so worried about people seeing your info? We're not doing anything illegal in #dreamcastdev. :)

Well because with his host name some one can logon to his network if he has shares open. Why should any one trust people they dont know on a forum with $1000's worth of computer. Common for people not to what to use IRC because of this. I also would not use it and back multiverse up on fears of this thing happen. Ive had it happen so once bitten as they say. It was only an emulation IRC so what makes this any better.

Any IRC carrys a risk. so does posting on this forum that also will show your IP.

So it has to stop some were paranoid I know about that lol.

Only to mods/admins, not the general public. If it worries you *that* much, use a proxy service. Or just buy a simple home firewall. Won't save you from anyone determined enough, but it will take care of 90% of the automated crap out there.

multiverse, if your computer has a security problem you should be focussing on fixing it rather than on trying to find ways to hide your ip from the public. ;) Most hackers will simply scan for vulnerable computers, so if your computer has a security problem they will most likely find you anyway. ;)

Another reason to hide your IP would be to hide your identity. But on freenode most people just say who they are and have their full name in their 'whois' data. People like to know who they're talking to.

It's not dead, you must have either

a) mistyped the channel name, or
b) visited the wrong network
