Sony has announced that an upcoming PlayStation 3 firmware update will enhance the system's Blu-ray playback capabilities. Tucked into firmware update 2.20 will be support for Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, otherwise labeled as BD-Live. The feature enables certain Blu-ray movies to connect to the internet and enable download additional interactive content -- movie DLC, if you will. Sony notes that the update will make the PlayStation 3 the first BD-Live Blu-ray player on the market. Oh, sorry, the PLAYSTATION 3.
Other enhancements included in firmware 2.20:
* Music and photo playlists can be exported from the PS3 to the PSP.
* DivX and WMV files larger than 2GB can be played.
* DVDs and Blu-rays will resume playback from the moment you last stopped them.
* The PSP can be used as a remote control to play music on the PS3.
* The web browser will feature faster page loading times and the ability to save linked files and stream linked videos.
* "Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added to the AV control panel for Blu-rays and DVDs.
The update will make its way onto the PlayStation Network "in the next few days."
I guess this is where being a PS3 owner is beginning to pay off. All of the standalone blu-ray players on the market are SOL for BD-Live support. Now we just need Home and MGS4 to get here
Well the PS3 is starting to actually look better than it has to me for a while personally. Great updates like these are just a few reminders of why we own the system.
Definitely not a bad thing, but every Blu-ray player can, you know, play movies, so I don't think it's anything to be excited about. I don't really think this is going to be used that much.
* The web browser will feature faster page loading times
Good, I use my PS3 for almost all my web browsing nowadays, and that weird lag when loading pages definitely annoys me. Hopefully this will fix it.
Yea I have noticed that myself. MY Nintendo Wii actually seems to browse the web more smoothly then my Ps3.
Plus the Wii is more compatible with flash and sites that have certain securities. However, it's easier for me to surf with the PS3 due to it's multiple window browsing and the fact that I have a Logitech Mediaboard, making surfing similar to a PC experience.
