It reminds me of the PSP's d-pad. The color looks exactly like a ds lite though, only way to make this even more like a ds lite is to add a top screen.

Is this the unit I remember reading about in another thread recently that was supposed to improve on the GP2X quite a bit? Ive always wanted to get one, but the battery and a few other things I read about it were a major turn off.

Nope... that's still under wraps.

This new white GP2X sorta came out of nowhere. Looks like a nice improvement, though I'm a bit worried about the D-Pad. They say it's 8-way, but I'd imagine you have to hit two buttons at once to pull off diagonals. That's awkward.

In other words, exactly like a Playstation controller.

I hate consoles that insist on broken up D-pads. I'm looking at you Sony.

I dont remember, is this console backlit to begin with? I think that was one of my major problems with the unit besides the batter. I REALLY REALLY want to get one of these. As new games dont appeal to me *too* much, and I'd love a little portable emulation with an ebook app and even an extra mp3/movie player. Especially after playing with ubuntu for the past 3 versions, i'd love something to tinker with.

What was the name or a link to the new unit that is being made again? I might have to wait for that one to come around. No backlight and no decent batter really just kill it for me.

Is that the controller that needed a new design of receiver dongle to fit properly in the slim PS2s? If so, is there any way to tell which version you're getting?

Yes, the GP2X has a backlit screen.

The name of the new machine still hasn't been revealed, but all the information we have on it can be read in the first post here:

the gp2x is a failure. It has a worst HB scene than the psp and doesnt even have its own line of real games. The gp32 had a chance but everything after that has been crap. No real games is pointless. PSP is still the best portable for emulation.

I own two of them; one for my PS2 and one for my PC. I saw the PS3 version of that controller, and I must wonder if that USB dongle is compatible with the PC. If so, I would buy another one for convenient laptop use without a PC/PS2 adapter. Best controller ever.

It fits fine, it just is a little tall and makes the PSTwo sit around an eighth of an inch off the table. It's really not that big of a deal. Back when it actually bothered me, I just put two pennies under the back and it sat level.

BUMP!

If anyone cared about the spiritual-successor to the GP2X which I brought up earlier, we have some new, concrete info on it:
  • It will use the OMAP3430 for it's SoC, which, in simple terms means: a machine leaps and bounds more powerful than the PSP. You can expect fullspeed emulation for PSX, GBA, SNES, possibly N64, and many other systems.
  • It will feature a D-Pad and two analogs.
  • WiFi
  • Keyboard
  • Touchscreen
  • It'll cost roughly $330 USD, or £199 (including VAT)
  • It will probably be released in Spring '08
  • It still doesn't have a name.
So, if the price is too steep, or you simply can't wait till spring, you should get a GP2X now.

Here's the link to the most recent (and extremely lengthy) discussion about the device:

# It will use the OMAP3430 for it's SoC
I don't see any real confirmation of this, and I'd be a little bit surprised if they could actually get OMAP series chips (though I guess they've at least talked to somebody enough to get pricing estimates):
Texas Instruments OMAP3430 page wrote:This product is intended for high-volume wireless OEMs and ODMs and is not available through distributors. If your company meets this description, please contact your TI sales office.
