Wii-diculously unhealthy

Post by ace » Thu Nov 30, 2006 12:48 pm

Gamespot wrote:Nintendo is seeking to lead the charge against the notion that all gamers are unfit couch potatoes. Nationwide sellouts of the Wii indicate that gamers are supporting that notion, and many have been very vocal about the system's motion-sensitive controller as being a revolution in gaming. The problem is that it appears that after the first week of the console's release, many of those gamers are running out of breath.

The Wall Street Journal says that "Wii elbow" and other Wii-related physical issues may be the first widespread gaming-related injuries since "Nintendo thumb," the condition that ran rampant following the introduction of the NES in the '80s and the SNES in the '90s.

The newspaper spoke with several new Wii owners who were experiencing aches and pains from repeated use of the console. A 12-year-old from Kentucky reported numbness in her right arm after mimicking the motions of bowling and boxing in Wii Sports; a computer programmer in Minnesota, who admits to being "not very active," complained of sore shoulders; and a man in Indiana says he was "soaking wet with sweat, head to toe" after Wii Boxing.

Nintendo vice president of marketing Perrin Kaplan put it plainly. "[The Wii] was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement," she told the WSJ. "If people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more."

They forgot to mention the headaches and whatnot associated with playing the virtual boy for extended amounts of time...

I have talked to several people from work who have and play their wii on a daily basis, and while they report some soreness, its nothing like what's being reported.

I'm predicting in the future that a group of people will eventually sue Nintendo based on these claims.

Exactly. I've found myself a bit sore, but I'm not going to complain about it. I hardly move. This is great.

Yeah, moving your arm. The perfect way to fitness.

Alright, it's better than sitting on your ass perhaps, but it is hardly good exercise.

I don't know about that. Tennis really gets your whole upper body working if you play it realistically.

It's pretty obvious you haven't played it. When you do play tennis you actually jump around like a tennis player (not required of course) it's just natural.

That's certainly true of Tennis, but I think boxing is the most taxing on your body. It simply isn't fun unless you get up and really stand like you're boxing. Boxing is what got me the most sore.

I was just thinking about it from a personal perspective. I can guarantee if you gave me a Wii with Wiisports you wouldn't get me out of my seat. I didn't realise people actually were jumping around doing things realistically.

If I want to play videogames it is because I want to relax.
If I want exercise I'd go play proper sports.

If you want to play Wiisports as if it were real, fine go ahead. It just wouldn't be my personal preference to do so. That's pretty much why I've stated repeatedly in the past that if I were to get a Wii, I wouldn't want Wiisports. It just isn't my sorta thing.

My friends have money and I've got money but they won't let me box the shit out of their face or spend an entire day golfing. Wii sports though? They were more than happy to join in on it.
