The plural of Wii.

Post by stagg »

Well I couldn't find out so I emailed them and asked.

"In your letter, you asked what the plural of Wii is. Hmmm? You would say for example ?two Wii systems.? The emphasis of the plural would be on systems and not Wii."

O yea, problem solved.

Wiis. I guess you could be tempted to say "2 Wii" but that just sounds weird.

Why ask darc? It isn't latin.
It is a new word, so irregular plural rules automatically don't apply.
It ends in 'i' so that elimates all specific ~*s rules for such a word.
Therefore, the only option is to simply suffix it with s.
Thus, Wiis.

There's a very simple and easy way to resolve this.

List the two most likely candidates.
Wait until Stagg makes up his mind about what he thinks is right, and see which one he picks.
Eliminate it from the list.

And thus, you are left with your answer.

On another note, shouldn't we really say:

"Playstations 3" and
"Xboxes 360"?

No. Because the 3 and 360 form part of the name.

The great part about english is that you can, more or less, do whatever the hell you want. Get enough other people to do that and you got yourself a proper rule.

When working with proper names like Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, it sounds better, to me, to say Playstation3s and Xbox360s. I'd say the same goes for the Wii: Wiis.

I got to make a Wii joke today.

"What? You didn't do you homework over break? Were you too busy playing with your Wii?"

Because darc is the grammar nazi. Seriously, there isn't a single person on the forum that is more anal about grammar than darc.

Perhaps it's an irregular noun where there is no change in spelling between singular and plural.

For example if I owned 2 systems I'd say something like "I have two Wii".

While that may be the case, the simple fact of the matter is that the majority of people in the U.S. (and probably most other English-speaking countries) are simply going to say "Wiis". It may sound weird, but so does any other possibility. When in doubt, most people are just going to add an "s".

It isn't irregular though because English is now a standardized language with standardized, documented grammar rules. Anything new that enters the English language should conform to these rules.

Everything irregular in the English language is usually a result of how old the word is, and what language the word originated from. New words should simply not be irregular, as there is no need for any English speaker to treat them that way.

(Of course, none of this applies to slang and dialect)
