Wikipedia DVD article

Post by lynx44 »

Is this true? I don't ever recall this happening, and they don't cite their sources. Here's what it says in the DVD entry:
The Dreamcast, the first of the then "next generation" 128-bit video games consoles, was released by Sega in Japan in 1998, and in the U.S. and Europe in 1999. It did not play DVDs, which were still quite new and expensive and relatively unpopular at the time. Instead, it used a proprietary 1 Gb 4.75 inch disc known as a GD-ROM disc. By 2000, DVDs were getting more popular and a redesign was called in to add DVD capabilities. Instead, a free DVD player was offered with the machine in some regions, including Europe and Japan.
If someone can confirm this? Or am I getting it all wrong? It sounds like they're saying Sega bundled a DVD player (not built in, but just a standalone player) with the Dreamcast in some regions?

Here's a link to the DVD article:

I'm pretty sure they did at some point, but it was pretty short-lived and hardly worth mentioning in Wikipedia. I also was under the impression they did it just to clear units off the shelves, not because of a redesign.

I remember seeing DC hardware embedded into some kind of set-top entertainment device in a magazine, but I don't remember this ever going to production.

That's what's cool about Wikipedia: if you know it's wrong, you can fix it.

Their is a pic of the DVD add-on from E3 floating around. But the DVD player give away was SEGA's idea, but it only happened in Europe. They did it initially to combat the PS2 as people were buying it for its DVD playing ability but in the end was used to clear units.

Thats how I understood it anway. And storm, I don't think it needs to be fixed, it was correct.

Hmm, guess so. Still, it's misleading, one could understand the older writing as a specific Dreamcast DVD drive.

/me fixes article again. See if it's better now.

Well, their could have been a specific Dreamcast DVD drive, not much info was released about it, but what I found I put on devcast long ago http://devcast.dcemulation.org/other/pr ... totype.php

I linked to that as a reference. By the way, the maker of the Zip drive is Iomega, not "Imega".

As I recall, there was a bundle available in the UK, where you could purchase a Dreamcast and an Alba DVD player together for ?299, the same price as the Playstation 2. By itself, the Dreamcast was ?199 at the time.

Was it just me or did the article seem to imply software that allowed for DVD play on the Dreamcast?
