On the one hand, if Christian Whitehead is running the show this must be awesome.

On the other hand, the Sonic cycle.

On my third mutant hand, it's a little disappointing that Sega seem to have given up and have gone with the easiest way to finally make a good Sonic game and keep fans happy - a retro 2D platformer.

Has Sega even made their own Sonic game in a while? The last 2 or 3 have been third party developers.

Forget my mutant hand. They're making a 3D Sonic for next year too. Two new Sonic games in the same year. A retro one and a modern one. Oh my.

Well, the modern one is a continuation of Colors/Generations, which were the only GOOD Sonic games since the GBA.

Why they left out Sonic Lost Worlds?
I haven't played it for more than 5 minutes but it isn't bad enough to ignore.

As for the 2D retro game. It is a non canon fan game formally endorsed and published by Sega.

In a statement, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka described Sonic Mania as a “passion project” that “was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games.” He added, “This type of collaboration is a first for SEGA and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title.”

Yes it is. I admit, it's not that bad compared to some certain other Sonic games, but that's more down to how shit those games are rather than how good Lost World was.

Count me out then. Sonic is nothing without the deep and compelling narrative the series is known for.

True, the original Trilogy & Knuckles aren't about the compelling narrative but they have a story. More importantly all the classic side scrollers evolved the graphics and gameplay. I think since the day Sonic was created. Sonic Team has been striving for more realistic visuals. I don't think it is something Sonic Adventure introduced.

Edit: After making the post... I thought about Sonic 4 and if it was an appropriate continuation of the series. We all have discussed how it dropped the ball on gameplay I thought the graphics were fine even if it was more call backs then steps forward. Then I thought about Sonic Advanced. It isn't a classic. It has never been re-released. Aside from an N-Gage port (According to Wikipedia the game has been ported to Androids and Wii in Japan).

It was never meant to be a classic. It was primarily an experiment cause Sega now had a licensed developer for GBA.

The graphics are horribly pixelated. I don't quite know why? The original trilogy still looks great.
Unfortunately had they put in a little more effort and branded it Sonic 4. It could have actually been a true successor.

Maybe because the GBA only has a max resolution of 240x160? With the screen being so small, they probably had to scale the sprites, which combined with the small resolution made for really pixellated graphics.

Is the GBA inferior to the MD?

Edit: Never mind. 32 Bit my ass:

The GBA is pretty powerful, but screens at the time were still pretty hit and miss. 240x160 was really good for a handheld. Devs were able to get some good results, but things like conversions of console games were bound to suffer as the smaller screen and lower resolution made it hard to see without some scaling.

The other thing to consider with the GBA is the original didn't have a backlight, so devs had to make brighter versions of all their SNES ports. Which is why that image of Mario World looks terribly washed out.

That reminded me of this:

Revival Studios: Dreamcast - Radium

And the DRG 3D Engine by Rand Linden.

As this is an emulation site it's worth noting that there's color restoration patches for all these games. Get yourself a backlit GBA and a flash cart and you're away.

I can't think of many 3D GBA games that were commercially released, though outside of some 2.5D/Isometric stuff.

Most I can think of were cancelled
