Just Watched Super Mario Bro. Film
It was quite fun atleast before they went to Koopa Land.
I always wondered what happend to King Koopa suddenly he was retconned out of continuitiy or something and replaced by someone called Bowset?
Anyway the movie was a tremendous undertaking, no CGI all the props were made and you had like a lot of lizzard like creatures through out the movie I wonder how much the budget was... aside from Set Design I kind of Lost track of the movie, I couldn't keep up with the direction and the fact that I just watched it after LOST finale, I kept on seeing familiar faces.
Princess Daisy was Olivia Goodspeed and George Mikosky was playing a stupid Koopa hench man or something who changes sides half way through the movie, I also found the Metallic Mario Brothers logo amusing, I also enjoyed Luigi having a prominent role almost relegating Mario to a supporting character it kind of makes sense Luigi is a better character than Mario, taller, younger, and in better shape.

It's just like Princess Toadstool VS Princess Peach (now, full name of Peach Toadstool). Different names for the same character. I believe originally King Koopa was the Japanese name and Bowser was his US name, but now, King Koopa is basically his title and Bowser is his name. Sadly, the actor who was King Koopa, Dennis Hopper, just died.I always wondered what happend to King Koopa suddenly he was retconned out of continuitiy or something and replaced by someone called Bowset?
The movie is a scatter shot of randomness, but I find it fairly entertaining. Some good design work, and some terrible writing. I might also add that there is CG work in the film, and there are plate shots and here and there with digital backgrounds, but they're minor in comparison to newer films. The effects work in the movie is actually really good, I'd say. I saw it in theatres when it first came out. As I recall, I enjoyed it but was baffled by how little it has to do with the video games.

His title is King Koopa because he's the leader of the Koopas (e.g. Koopa Troopers, Goombas etc.). His name is Bowser.

I remember seeing this on TV a few times as a really young kid and I loved it. I haven't seen it since and have heard nothing but horrible reviews for it.
Still want to watch it eventually, though.

You just now watched it? Where were you in the early to mid 90s?

I was playing Sonic. Nintendo and Mario were things you enjoyed if having friends wasn't important to you at school.mrandyk wrote:You just now watched it? Where were you in the early to mid 90s?

My mom took me to the movie in the theater. It was a great 90 minute nap for her and a bizzare movie for me and the other two people in the room.

Re: Just Watched Super Mario Bro. Film
I saw it in 1994 I was probably 8 or so... and I only remember the scene where Koopa's hore dies and turns into the skeleton that was shirt scary.
So 16 years later I consciously watched it and I enjoyed parts of it, it must have had an insane budget.

Re: Just Watched Super Mario Bro. Film
If I remember correctly, I think it's budget was 10 million and it was a horrible flop. Or maybe it only made 10 million? Perhaps I will google this if I don't get distracted in the next 2 seconds...

Re: Just Watched Super Mario Bro. Film
Budget was 42 Million and it made about 21 Million in US.
It look a hell of a lot more than that, probably things were cheaper in the early 90s.

Re: Just Watched Super Mario Bro. Film
In todays dollars, it'd probably top 60 million. More importantly though, the budget was stretched due to many practical effects (which, if done well, are usually much cheaper than modern CG), and equally importantly, there are no major actors in it and so forth. When you hear the newest Tom Cruise or Bruce Willis or whatever action film has a 140 million budget, just remember probably 1/3 of that is just for the three or four lead actors and the director.

Re: Just Watched Super Mario Bro. Film
I think John Leguizamo was the best part about the movie, making him a prominent character and giving him his own seperate princess to rescue was one of the few awesome things they did.
