Re: Free Magic Decks

I used to play casually. I never had a deck of my own; I just used friends' decks. I haven't played in years, though.

Re: Cdrecord help?

If you ran scanbus and got a valid response, that means that it's configured properly.

I'm not sure what else might be going on. I haven't really used BootDreams (or even burned a DC disc) in quite a while.

Re: Cdrecord help?

Do you know for sure if CDRecord is configured properly on your computer? Apparently that error sometimes infers that your burner wasn't recognized by CDR.

Re: Looking to buy a new computer. Need some help

Electronic engineer with a useless degree. Computers used to be TAB A, SLOT A. For everything. Oops, you plugged in that cable upside-down? You just fried an $800 hard drive AND a $1200 motherboard. Wait about five years, and we'll THINK about keying cables and marking pin 0. True. But you left out...

Re: Looking to buy a new computer. Need some help

HP isn't a bad pre-built computer. HP is actually a pretty good pre-built computer. However, if you want high-end performance from an HP, you are going to pay for it. You can get a quad-core machine with a large hard drive (up to 1TB), 1 gig video card, 8 gigs of RAM or more and a good bit more per...

Wow! That's a pretty damn big television. Mine's only 42" (which would be about 1/12th the size of yours, apparently) :)

Re: upgrading wii firmware....

As far as I'm aware, none of the firmware updates that have been released break or remove the Homebrew Channel if it's already been installed. (I'm pretty sure my Wii is up to date, and I use the Homebrew Channel without any trouble on it). What the updates break is the Twilight Hack, which would m...

Re: Should Code-Red Help out GM?

Nope. You should help out Ford instead. The chances of Ford surviving are much greater than GM. :) Ford's got shit for a line up. Maybe if they had that inline-5 turbo Focus that's in the UK.... other than that, walking through a Ford dealership is a good treatment for sleep deprivation. I didn't r...

Re: just how secure is ssh?

you're right, Ex, i'm on the university network, connecting to a computer off-campus. so basically they'll be able to see who I'm connected to and that i'm using ssh/scp or maybe vnc over an ssh tunnel, but won't necessarily be able to see what files i'm transferring or what commands i'm sending ov...

Re: Building an HTPC on the cheap...

What operating system are you planning to run on this box? If you're going to run a 64-bit OS, and your motherboard can handle it, you really might want to load up on the RAM, as that (along with a good graphics card) is about the most important part of an HTPC. The more RAM, the less buffering and ...

Re: just how secure is ssh?

It depends on what you're connecting to. If you're connecting to the university network, and performing all of your actions there, they can basically see everything you're doing. The communication between your computer and their network is encrypted and pretty safe from anyone hacking in between. Ho...

Re: Converting plain files to sbi files (instantly)

If you do end up figuring a way to write any *nix-friendly code to check and un/scramble binaries, I'd be very interested in checking it out. I'm looking at the remote possibility of building some Web-based applications to work with SBI files. I don't think the code itself (at least to create custom...

Re: KDE 4.2 is out

I haven't tried 4.2 but my initial impressions of 4.0 and 4.1 haven't been positive. I don't understand/use widgets so I'm having trouble switching to the new system and a lot of the configuration options seem unintuitive to me at this point. I'm seriously considering reverting to a simpler desktop...

Re: the wii...

For me, it's ideal. I hardly play games anymore, and I much prefer the pick-up-and-play type games, rather than the kind of games you have to invest hours into before you get anything out of them. I don't buy that many games either, so quantity is not a problem. As long as the games I do buy have e...
