Well yes. If the box and manuals are all torn up it won't work, but it doesn't really matter after that. The store doesn't lose out because they can send it back to sony for credit, and sony doesn't lose out because they have insurance to cover things like this. I don't recommend lying about things ...

One thing you could do, is package back up (assuming you have the manuals and box) and take it back to Wal-Mart. Tell them you just got it for your birthday, or something and they'll exchange it for a new one. I did that twice with my old ps, and a few times with some games.
