Check the back of the PS2. There should be a series of # that look like this: scph-xxxxxx (don't know how many #s there are, but you get the idea). That will tell your model #. Just match it up online. 500001's are the new models (not the slim ones).

You might want to try cleaning the lens. May I ask what region your Dreamcast is from (i.e. PAL, NTSC, or NTSC-J). I have an extra GD-Rom drive.

If you are going to buy a program, Alcohol 120% is the best by far. It's easy, it works, and it's pretty versatile. There's a trial on its website, which I used w/o any problems. I dunno if its time sensitive or not.
