wiring my house with CAT5

Post by Nico0020 »

I have wireless, but there are somethings like my Dreamcast and original xbox that are not happy with. I am also setting up a media center back end that needs wired. Anyways I already have one cable running in my attic, so that is not a problem, I know how to do that part. My problem lies in the wall mount I want to install. Basically as of now I have two ends of my cat5 cable hanging out of two walls. Rather than splice and put together a wall mount, I am trying to find a "dual sided wall mount". I dont know what that would actually be called, but that is the best way for me to describe it. I have been able to find them for phone lines, but I can't seem to find ethernet cables. Basically it is where the end of the cable in the wall just jacks into a female cat5 port, and on the other side of the wallmount there is also a female cat5 port. This would make my life a lot easier, as I hate splicing and wiring that stuff. I can't seem to find this anywhere though. Does anyone know where I can get a wall mount/plate like this so I dont have to try so hard. Thanks!

Honestly Cat5 is only 8 wires (iirc). It's pretty hard to get it wrong.

Kind of expensive, but

If you want to search other places for this kind of thing, the magic words are "keystone" and "coupler".

cool, thanks. I saw these at radioshack last night, but they were a bit expensive. I think I saw em at fry's electronics though which would have em a lot cheaper if I did see em there. I'll check it out, thanks!

Yeah, I think couplers would be your best bet. Nice and clean too.

Just make sure you don't use crossover cable instead of standard CAT5.
