Dreamchess.

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Dreamchess.

Post by MrSiggler »

Knowing how many, myself included, don't visit the front page too often.. i'll post my news here as well ;)
--

Phantom and myself have put a demo together of our homebrew Chess game, Dreamchess, that we've been working on over the past year or so.

It will run on the Dreamcast, as well as Windows, Linux, and BeOS.

You can get the Dreamcast version, in a ready to burn CDI image here, http://www.retrovg.com/dreamchess/dreamchess-demo.zip.

If you are interested in trying it out on the PC, the source is on our Berlios project page, http://developer.berlios.de/projects/dreamchess/

Also, we are in need of 3D models, artwork, and eventually audio/music. The game already has the theme support -- take a look in the data folder on the disc, or drop a message here if you want more info, and/or are interested in helping out :)

Edit: Here are some screenshots..

This already looks better than the commercial go game for the DC. (or is that something I imagined...)

As long as the system has SDL, SDL_image and an OpenGL library it should be fairly easy to get it running. You could just download the sourcecode from our SVN repository and try to build it.

There's no windows demo at this time. Maybe I'll build one later today.

Possibly in the future.
Salamander2 wrote:internet ranking.
We're planning an online mode, but we probably won't start on that till next year. (Assuming that the interest in this project is large enough to warrant further development in the first place.)
Salamander2 wrote:themes to download and store to vmu.
This isn't possible because the themes are too large.
Salamander2 wrote:mp3 swap disk.
We suspect that MP3 support would take up too much CPU time. We're looking at MOD files and CD audio as possible alternatives.

Thanks for your suggestions. :)

That looks great. :)

It'd be very cool if we could get some more and better chess sets in the game. I should point out though that for use on dreamcast, the models need to have very few polygons, around 150 on avarage (per chesspiece). If you, or anyone else, want to help out with this project in any way, just PM me or MrSiggler. :)

hmmm... I've never tried making models for a game. What format do they need to be in? ...I'm quite familiar with Lightwave but not so much anything else. perhaps I'd be able to export them...

We use our own model format that we call DCM. The files are created with a blender export script. As long as the model can be imported in blender, it should be possible to export it to the DCM format. Blender has many import scripts (including 3DS and LWO).
