Make the DC read GDRs or be multiregion

Post by qatmix »

ive been searching for ages for that link which shows how to hack a DC to read all region GDRs, and it also means you can run GDR's without a System disk. It was linked here but I just cant find it..

pretty sure you can get modchips to save you the hassle of swapdisking.

It wont work. A mod chip allows multi-region games to be played. I want to boot GDRWs, There is a hack so you do not need to have a system disk. Sorry if I was not more clear

if you are talking about cd-rw's then yes you can. it requires a pot tweak which you can find by searching the forums. but do the hack at your own discretion. we dont take resposibility for the damage (or the pin sized burn hole in your dreamcast lid) done to your dreamcast.

I dont know how many times he has said gd-roms. He probably has some gd rom demos and prototypes he wants to play, but he doesnt have the system disk to boot them. Sorry I cant help, I have never seen that particular mod I thought perhaps I could make your question more clear. Good luck.

Hes talking about booting pre-production/beta GD-Rs. AFAIK no such mod exists for this. If you find any info on it, tell me because i have 3 betas id like to play with

There is no "battery" hack to run GDRs.

You need a system disc, or an equivalent boot disk.

Sorry Rand, yer wrong on this one. Just dissconnect the battery of the CPU board and away you go.. . I thought there was a more elegant solution though.

Quasar PM me and I'll show you how to do it.

No probs Rand, I've just finished a 80hr week () so the original question could have been worded a bit better. I just fancied playing one of my old games. (edit should have been a PM)

cheers

The issue wasn't the way it was worded -- but I'll save you the trouble...

It has *NOTHING* to do with the battery.

Do a quick Google and you'll find a bunch of hits for "Dreamcast swap trick battery."

In all of them, the one element that makes it "work" is present -- HOLDING DOWN THE LID SWITCH.

The battery disconnect is unrelated and simply present because an original poster long ago wanted to play a Japanese import version of Sega's online game and they needed to reset their DC's settings.

Rand.

edit: *ONLY* 80 hours? Geez, you have it easy!

Dont you need to ensure the time/date settings have to appear? Otherwise the disc will not stop? Also when this screen appears then the Bios doesnt reset when you disc swap so you dont need the lid switch down.

Again memory could hae faded, and pro-plus may be disorting my memory, its been ages I normally use a system disc but Its packed away atm.

Cheers

The BIOS resets the DC when it detects the lid switch changing.

The GDROM resets itself when it can't read data from the disc correctly or when the lid switch toggles ... unless it's entered standby... which is the key.

By waiting the 3 minutes, the GDROM enters standby mode, and when you have the lid switch held down, you can swap it.

This is why ALL of the references to the "Battery swap trick" include the critical step of somehow holding down the lid switch...

The date/time settings are irrelevant.

This is also why the other "solution" is to use force to stop the GDROM from spinning and then swap the disc -- again, it requires holding down the lid switch.

You'll see...

Rand.

edit: FYI, the predominant reason that the lid switch is even present is to engage the disc brake so people don't lose their fingers/arms/hands/eyes because of the high speed of the disc... not to deter piracy.
