i place mines on a small box and textbooks. (Gotta use a textbook for something, right?) If i place it on a carpet, it will get very hot quickly!

The carpet in my rumpus room is of a shag type. How often should my mother vacuum the carpet ? Right now she vacuums my dreamcast play area once a week. Is this enough ?

It isn't the debris you need to worry about, it's the fact that the carpet is quite a good insulator of heat and the thicker it is, the more restrictive it will be to the airflow underneath the DC.
If you really must have it on the carpet, stick it on a book ( as someone suggested ) or some other flat thing that will let air in about the underneath of the machine.

Why risk it? Think about it. All of the dust, debris, and other small particles all end up on the floor. Not to mention that if it is on the floor, you have a better chance of stepping on it by mistake (perhaps not you but others).
However, you could use it as an intruder alert defense system with four controllers spread out in the cardinal directions. If anyone should trespass, snag!!!, they fall to the floor and beg for mercy from the killer Dreamcast.
