PC-BSD 7 Alpha

Post by Maturion »

You can now download alpha versions of PC-BSD 7 at http://www.pcbsd.org/ and http://www.pc-bsd.de !
PC-BSD is a derivate of FreeBSD, made for casual users. It features a KDE desktop and a lot of applications are available for it, like FireFox, OpenOffice, Opera, Pidgin....

It's definitly worth a try!

I never did play around with bsd. in the search for a new OS i tried ubuntu and just stuck with it. Though I never really did care for KDE, always liked GNOME much better.

I've generally preferred GNOME over KDE myself (when using a full-blown DE rather than just Fluxbox), but it looks like they're doing some cool/interesting stuff with KDE4 and I plan to try it once it gets to a point that they consider it ready for regular users (4.0 was more of a "stable framework for app development" release). As for BSD vs. Linux, the BSDs are nice in that you get something that really feels more like it's designed/documented as a system and not just a pile of programs (by which I mean the underlying OS regardless of DE concerns), but they tend to lag Linux a bit on hardware support.

PC-BSD 7 came out. It is using the new FreeBSD 7 kernel and comes with KDE 4.1.
