Dreamcast 2008 HD ** Update 1 **
Merry christmas and a happy new year!
I finally got my Dreamcast the present it deserved: a worthy TV!
What you see below are some pictures i took of the DC connected via the VGA cable.
The images have not been manipulated in any way except resizing. The motion blur is just the slow shutter speed of the camera.
While not as HD as the 360, the good old DC still looks kickass!!!!
Part One: Racing
sega rally
daytona
Tokio Extreme racer 2
Le Mans 24
Hope you enjoy them!
Part Two: Adventure
Shenmue
Alone In The Dark
HeadHunter
Veronica

Re: Dreamcast 2008 HD
- Dude, that's not really fair isn't it... Like any other pre-HDTV connector, SCART is limited to Interlaced signals which LCD or Plasma TVs can't display properly (so they have to use de-interlacers to convert it into some kind of a pseudo-progressive format). A Wii component cable will produce a similar EDTV picture on your TV as your Dreamcast does via its VGA box.Segata Sanshiro wrote:and this one is the wii conneted with a scart cable, much blurrier!
Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing these pics. I would guess there are quite a few people out there that never saw Dreamcast via VGA. I keep reading this "just plug it in with the S-Video cable"-nonsense. Appearently people can afford to spend thousands of Euros or Dollars for HDTVs but are too poor to buy a VGA box for $14.

Re: Dreamcast 2008 HD ** Update 1 **
I just bought a vga to resurrect my DC on my tv as well. I was more prone no not putting it in 16x9 mode, but maybe i should. I did notice that quite often it doesn't even fill up the 4:3 portion of the screen (small black bars on top and bottom), but it still looks really good,, pretty comparible to the wii.. the vga box was worth it.

Re: Dreamcast 2008 HD
No, it has more to do with the fact that many many HDTVs simply do not have vga input. In my house we have 73in, 57in, and 20in HDTVS (two rear projection and one LCD) and none have VGA input. If I were to purchase a new HDTV for myself of course, I would make VGA a priority, but in most topics where people ask for advice it is for HDTVs that have no VGA input availible, nor scart, at which point they're basically limited to expensive adapters or s-video.Christuserloeser wrote:Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing these pics. As for the DC in 16x9, there are a number of games that support widescreen output and will actually render to widescreen so that stretching isn't needed and whatnot. There should be a number of lists upon search on these forums.

Looks very nice. I don't care what anyone says, Dreamcast was way advanced for it's time.

Re: Dreamcast 2008 HD ** Update 1 **
PS2 doesnt output VGA natively, so it can not look as crisp as the Dreamcast does.cak! wrote:it looks like a playstation 2 or xbox game big deal.
In other news, i got my component cable for the wii, and it indeed looks much better than with the scart, but it isnt anywhere near the DC+VGA in terms of pixel definition or colors.

Re: Dreamcast 2008 HD ** Update 1 **
Most PS2 games don't display in 480p.
...and yeah, VGA with its RGB colors does look great and is even better than Y'PbPr.

Re: Dreamcast 2008 HD ** Update 1 **
I was playing Shadow of the Collosus (spelling?) on my friends 50" Pioneer plasma tv, and it looked like real crap. I even had it hooked up with Sony official ps2 component cables, but it still looked like puke...too bad. It is odd how even a regular tv can make certain games look better than the high-def that people pay big $$$$. I guess even if you put a ton of makeup on a pig...it is still a ps2 - hahaha...that was my joke for support of the Dreamcast.
Those screens look so good. I just got married about a week ago, and my wife had bought this huge lcd tv set that has all sorts of inputs. It is only too bad that it doesn't have a vga input or that there isn't a cheap way to have the dreamcast use an hdmi plug...

If it has DVI-I / DVI-A, you can use a simple VGA to DVI-I / DVI-A cable.
Congrats on your marriage btw

As soon as i find the time i'll post some more pics!
REZ looks great, i havent seen the 360 remake, but keep in mind that the Dreamcast runs at 640X480... it looks great (screenshots), but its not truly HD.

Re: Rez comparisons.
I downloaded the Rez HD demo the other day, played it then tried my DC version after.
Rez HD looked really good, noticably better than the DC via VGA with the line work looking much smoother and anti-aliased. Don't get me wrong the DC version still looked good but the HD version looked really nice and having it in widescreen was a boon.
As a sidenote, I have my DC hooked up via VGA to a 23" Samsung LCD TV. I've found my DC with VGA looks better connected to a CRT monitor instead as the LCD reveals the flaws/jaggies/image compression etc a little more. I also sit quite close to the TV which makes the differences more apparent too. I'd take pictures but my digi camera is really crappy and every comes out blurred or out of focus
