PC Emulation Question

Post by quick518 »

I just recently bought a laptop for $40 just for typing papers at school. It has a P1 133mhz engine, 40 mb RAM, 1.4gb HD and its running windows 95. I know its slow as piss, thats why its just for typing. But, I was wondering if I could run some of the older system emulators on it like NES, SNES, genesis? Is it possible to run, lets say ZNES at full speed with this laptop? Is MAME out of the question? What speed does MAME require? thanks

zsnes should be fine. there are mame builds made for old PCs that have asm cores for the processors that should work fine for pre-90's games. There are probably better specialized emulators for arcade games that are built for speed with assembly cores though.

Meka would see him right for Master System emulation, some of the Megadrive emulators should do decently on that system as well (no magic mushroom emulation though of course) I'm sure I used Genecyst back in the day on a similar system along with Nesticle for the nes stuff (note both of these aint been worked on for ages). Mame will depend on the games you try to run largely. If any of these arcade titles are of interest you:

I use to have a P1 166mhz with 32 megs of ram, and it ran ZSNES fairly well. And since that was many years ago, I imagine it would run even better today.

NESticle ran great on a 486. Very impressive emu. Of course, there are better ones that will also run perfect on your higher end machine.

FCE Ultra and Zsnes should run fine. I used to use nesticle, snes9x and genecyst on a 166. It (snes9x & genecyst) ran the games at about 90% speed. Id imagine with todays advanced in emulation they should run pretty close to, if not, full speed.

Thanks.

You should be fine playing Megadrive/Genesis games too.

On my old P1 60MHz (Yes, 60MHz!), I remember playing genesis games on a dos emulator and it worked perfect.

As someone who used a Pentium-133 laptop for schoolwork until late last year, I'd recommend (DOS versions wherever possible, of course):
Meka (MasterSystem/GameGear)
zSNES (SNES)
KGen98 (Genesis), or Genecyst
NESticle (NES), or one of the older builds of LoopyNES (the later versions screwed up the sound)
No$Gmb (GameBoy)

Those should run reasonably well, esp. if you keep the sound samplerate at 11025 or 22050. One of the early releases of Nemu64 will also work using the software renderer, but you'll only get about 2-5fps.

Oh, and sorry...but MarioKart, StarFox, and other SNES games using special in-cartridge hardware will be a bit sluggish. Nothing you can really do about it.
