Sikh Man Attacked By Group Shouting Derogatory Slurs In Queens
JULY 12TH, 2004

Police are investigating an assault on a Queens man whose family says he was attacked because he's a Sikh.

According to family members, 54-year-old Rajinder Singh Khalsa was assaulted Sunday evening when he and his cousin were walking by the Villa Russo Restaurant in Richmond Hill, on the way to another restaurant.

Police say the two Sikh men got into an argument with three white men in their 20's, who Khalsa says made remarks about the turbans he and his cousin wear, and made a reference to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Khalsa says when he tried to explain the religious significance of the turban the men began to assault him.

The victim says other men not originally involved in the argument joined in the beating.

"They were beating me, like five or six people,? said Khalsa. ?They were just waiting, waiting, and they had something in their hands. I am sad more. Why an American attacking on an American? This is wrong. Why are Americans attacking innocents? This is wrong. We are peaceful people. If you see our community, all the community, you will see the record. Our Sikh community is so much a peaceful community.?

"Those people were drunk and they are hitting him just because he wore a turban. That is so unfair,? said Gurvinder Kaur, the victim?s daughter. ?Just look at your age and look at his age you; you should have some respect. We are peace loving people, and our religion teaches us to have peace and love each other, and not to hurt or hit anyone. How can you hit someone like that so cruel? Don't you have any human in you?"

Khalsa, who was knocked unconscious by the beating, was treated for multiple fractures to his nose and eye socket at Jamaica Hospital. He was released from the hospital on Monday morning.

The father of two has earned numerous awards for his community service and volunteer efforts, and he says he even organized a group to donate blood after September 11th.

News of the assault quickly spread through the Richmond Hills community, where many residents are clearly upset.

?Why did this happen so? Because we are very humble people and serve the community,? said one Sikh man. ?More than 30 years people are living here, but no such bad situation happened like this. We are very fearful for this.?

Police have made no arrests in connection with the case, which they have classified as a possible bias crime.

Witnesses say they jotted down the license plate of the car the attackers fled in, and that they picked up a cell phone one of the men left at the crime scene. The evidence has been turned over to police.

NYPD investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.

i'm not suprised. lived in this area for a good 17-18 years. this area was initially all italian. this use to be john gotti's and his mob's playground and home. i didn't enjoy much my childhood in this area. always felt like an outcast and faced some racism. only been in the past 10 years where the indian/guyanese population sky rocketed. most of the italians moved out but still take control of an area south to richmond hills.

i aint suprised this happened again. fcuking italians.

So, when the Italians don't like your people, they're racist and wrong. But when you don't like the Italians, that's perfectly acceptable :?.

Is it just me, or does that seem a tad hypocritical?

well az i understand you live in wales and also understand you are very uncultured. it is just the same for yourself to read kafka and than say you understand his points but then at the sametime never experienced true meloncholia.

there has always been a huge arrogrance stemming from italian-americans. check american media, movies, and history.

hey i when i was little i really didn't understand or had a clue about what race was. i knew my father claims he was guyanese/indian, i remember asking him waht tribe he belonged to. my mom was hispanic but i really didn't grow up with that either culture.

around 4-5 my parents moved to that richmond hill area. was pretty much all white and segregated. the black community was segregated all the way more west of the area. i found myself in a school system where i was the only but a few of the non whites. it was then i started to feel weird and very insecure about myself. until this day i have issues relating to my own culture and have on the back of my mind placed a negative remorse for my own background thx to living in this area that i will probably never will get rid of. aint it sad?

i'm not quite sure how wales is but i'm sure yourself or any of ur family members will never have to get through that nor ever develope a distaste for ur ownself.

live in my olive tan skin, enter a pizzaria, be curtious and recieve an insinceire look. it just feelings that have been hurting me since lil and to others in my community. its not hate, its dissapointment.

phish i'm probably one of the few here that is the most liberal and understanding to all of humanity. that aint stopping me to jerking to italian porn.

i'm zull first. my race, religion, tradition, culture, and everything else comes last. reputatution is what counts.

How do you know I am "uncultured"? And just so you know, Wales isn't some small village in the middle of nowhere, completely isolated from the world.

I've got a pretty strong feeling that applies to all Americans ;).
AmadeusZull wrote:around 4-5 my parents moved to that richmond hill area. was pretty much all white and segregated.
How can an area be almost completely white and also segregated?

This doesn't explain your racist attitude towards the Italians. You just seem to be saying, "People have been prejudiced towards me in the past, so that's my excuse."
AmadeusZull wrote:i'm not quite sure how wales is but i'm sure yourself or any of ur family members will ever have to get through that.
Living in Wales, we tend not to get many Italian-Americans.
AmadeusZull wrote:live in my olive tan skin enter a pizzaria, be curtious and recieve an insinceire look.
An "insinceire" look? Oh no! You poor fellow.
AmadeusZull wrote:it just feelings that have been hurting me since lil and to others in my community.
So you respond to racism with more racism?

quote me again. all i said was f-ing italians.

the incident happened infront of a restuarant named villa russo. the ones who commited the crime were italians. the only ones in my community who have a long history with extreme views of hate (and acts of hate, prior to this there have been many sikhs harrassed and beating up, and in the mid 80s this area had loads of civil rights protest) are italians living here.

lol at the pathetic attempt to slice my text.

read a little of some of the struggles jews, blacks, asian, latinos, and many others have endured.

i aint making this up. this is our reality.

the area is split into 4 parts. imagine if you will in just in a mile and half radius you inside it howard beach, richmond hills, ozone park, and south ozone park.

for the most part 20 years ago richmond hills and ozone park were all italian and some polish. behind my house there is a huge house which use to be a plantation we had this area where blacks worked. after the civil rights movement slowly the black population was moving into the once whole ozone park. i'm not sure but in what year arround the 1970s they divided ozone park into 2 areas. ozone park and south ozone park. south ozone park is where the blacks resided.

so for a good many years the richest of the rich of the italians lived in howard beach (jon gotti, gambini crime family). they made sure to keep all other minorities out and still have until this day kept that promise. but for ozone park and richmond hills was more for the middle class italians who lived in this area. slowly the migrated south to florida or moved into howard beach. my family came around 1987 to ozone park just blcoks away from where richmond hills start from where the incident happened. lil by lil richmond hills, ozone park, south ozone park, got bought all out by mostly indians and guyanese and a good number of latinos.

so as you can see the italians remain segregated in howard beach surrounded by the minorities around them. loads of resentment still holds.

Spike Lee does a good job ridiculing prejudiced Italian-Americans. Just watch "Do The Right Thing" or "Jungle Fever".

Of course, we know not all Italian-Americans are like that.

My mother is from Italian descent, and I'm ashamed by the behavior of some Italians in the U.S. They were specially nasty towards black people in the early 20th century.

Speaking about race relations with little first-hand experience is also a bit hypocritical.

A large part of America were specially nasty towards blacks in the early 20th century, and for quite some time after that.

Basing your opinions of people based on your own immature prejudices is also a bit hypocritical.

You talk as if nobody else talks to people of another race.

What kinda fking shit is this? Ive been in Manhattan for years now and never heard of anything this racially blatant.

(i should add that police beatings usually have some lame excuse or whatnot)

Really sad. Doesnt do much for Queens as a whole either.

we are not talking about all of america. we are talking about NEW YORK, which abolished salvery b4 the south did. ny is not alabama where martin luther king jr marched. ny is not the scene where black churches burned (though i'm sure there was similar violence).

http://www.queenstribune.com/anniversary2003/1987.htm

this is from 1987 which documents a racial protest in my area a year b4 my family move there. imagine of all places where racism exist, right in nyc.

wtf is this "early 20" century crap? pathetic.

Hey, man, I was actually on your side :D .

NYC was actually a nice place for African-Americans in the pre-WWII days. But the mob had gambling and heroine rackets going on in Harlem, probably the only place where black people had true financial and political power in the U.S. at the time.

The Italian, Irish and Jewish mobsters referred to black people as "animals" and "worthless" all the while supplying them with nice amounts of heroine and letting them handle the dirty work, like whorehouses and running numbers, while they reaped the lion's share of the profits. They then complained about "coons driving Cadillacs"... :o

That's pretty much nasty treatment, in my book.

That's really sad to hear. Sorry about your neighbourhood too.

I was the only filipino for blocks when I lived in a small place in vancouver... pretty ironic that it's full of asians now. But I live in vancouver ISLAND, now this place has like 40 asian people, tops.

Feels weird to be a minority. Feels like SHIT to be a visible one and suffer from fucking prejudice people too. :(

the only time i wasnt a minority is when i lived in germany. although the us is mostly white, all the places ive ever lived, white folk were the dying breed. according to the most recent census, hispanic and mexican american people now make up more of a percent of this city than whites.
