Dream On - Dreamcast Game Contest

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Lik-Sang did a write-up about Dream On and the Dream On contest, so the deadline has been extended to March 17, 2004 to accomodate anyone just finding out about the contest who may want to enter, and of course give all of you guys more time and less headache over the holiday season. :)

Also, Dreamcast-Scene has joined the contest as a sponser, and is offering Hais VGA boxes to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners - as well as their as-of-yet-unreleased GP32 to DC adapter to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

That means it's supposed to be done by mid-March now? Hmm...

Well, that makes it a little easier. I wasn't really happy with what I have at the moment.

What tools and editors are available for developing on the Dreamcast? I am new to the scene and am very interested in developing on the Dreamcast platform for this contest.

First, you'll need a *nix environment... this can be Linux, Cygwin or MinGW on a Windows box, etc. The compiler we use is GCC. You'll need toolchains for the SH4 and ARM processor. Then, you'll want to get KallistiOS.

Thanks for the info!

What does the KallistiOS include?

What are toolchains? :)

Thanks again.

You can probably get better help in the Programming Discussion forum. KallistiOS is your development libraries, and the embedded operating system that most homebrew and emus on the DC use. It also includes SDL (be warned, the DC port has some problems) as an 'addon'.

The toolchains are the tools you'll need to compile programs for the Dreamcast. There are several build scripts that should download and compile everything for you once you've got a Linux or Cygwin environment set up, or there are a few precompiled toolchains out there too.

I'm having a few kinks to iron out with the layout, plus I accidently lost about 6 pages.

Everything should be sorted out by early next week. :)

If I finish something in time for the contest and it doesn't win, I plan on releasing it anyway...

There is no set protocol for the devvers to go by. Most have expressed that their games will be freely available in some form or another, but its entirely their own choice.

Assuming it ever gets finished, mine will be available somewhere, in some form. If it wins, there will probably be a demo. If not, either a demo or the full version would be available somewhere.
