Is DirectX 9 really necessary?

Post by MethodGit »

I read somewhere that apparently you shouldn't really bother installing it unless you have a DirectX9-compatible motherboard/soundcard/videocard/whatever.

I have an SB Live! sound card from three-four odd years back, and I have an NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 graphics card which I believe I've been using for either two or three years. My motherboard is most recent, an ASRock K7VT2 (to fit my Athlon XP 2000+ chip in).

With all this in mind, should I stick with 8.1 or go for the "latest flava" () and whack in 9.0?

I just wouldn't... makes some older game incompatible! If you have a game that requires DX9, go for it... otherwise, there's no point
!

Incompatible! That sucks...

there is no real point unless games require it or you have directX9 compatible hardware.

however i'd do it just so you that when you get a game that needs it you don't have to wait to install it before you play the game.

and it shouldn't really make anything incompatible as it's the same as any other version of directX, just with added bits.
The reason for having: A firewall

Independance day, the aliens were destroyed because a computer was used to access their network and disable key systems. If they had had a firewall, the earth would be just another worthless rock floating in space.

Upgrade it only if you have to - it's been known to cause fairly major headaches.

Enter the Matrix is weak shit. It runs like a piece of led on my driveway.

And DirectX is forewards and backwards compatible which causes no problem.
i've had just about enough of the mods. if you wanna fight, let me just wip out my switchblade and cut you up into tiny pieces and feed you to the pigeons.

Well, I had issues with DirectX 5 and DirectX 3 - they didn't like each other very much. Some DX3 games didn't work properly with DX5, and I actually had DirectX 3's installer screw up a DX5 installation somehow, and all the DX5 games stopped working.

As with everything else, I don't upgrade anything major unless I require something that is only present in a newer version - major bugfixes or additional functionality usually.

Your card had DX9? It's a Windows component - it doesn't really have anything to do with the hardware.

DirectX 9.0b should cause no problems. I challenge you to find a game that will run fine on DirectX 7 but not DirectX 9.0b.

I've had few problems with DX upgrades, but I did have a major headache with DX8. I already had DX8, and I bought UT2003, which tried to install DX8 over DX8. For some reason it didn't detect that it was already installed, and it screwed everything up. I had to go into the registry to fix it :?

Hmmph. Found a really interesting emulator which requires DX9 - CCS64 v3.0 Beta (link can be found below Downloads table). I thought placing d3d9.dll (which it complained about not finding) beside it would trick it, which it did, only I couldn't get a screen. Damn.
