Forum Maintenance Completed

Post by |darc| »

Sorry for the down time, but it was very much necessary. Due to some database corruption, the site's board software could not be updated for several years now, but after some spam bot issues I decided to bite the bullet and fix it. Since the database is extremely large, most operations performed through web-based methods timed out, and SSH connections to our host would time out as well. In the end, I had to dump the database to my local machine, install an Ubuntu server with apache2, MySQL, and PHP in a virtual machine, perform SQL surgery, then reupload the entire database in dozens of individual chunks. It was a pain, but everything was a major success!

Because the forum software was so outdated, it needed to be reinstalled from scratch. All of the modifications (Quick Reply, Front Page news, Topic Titles on Index, etc.) had to be readded. I'm pretty sure I got everything. If you notice something different or wrong, be sure to post so that I can address it.

Thank you for making forums back. I think it would be really disgraceful to lost all the base of knowledge, that had raised by past 10 years or more (except dev-null of course).

Thanks |darc|. I guess this was really necessary. It would have been terrible to see the site get hacked one day.

I would have just trimmed the database down.

Maybe we should locate a backup of the forum base in some safe place in order to avoid an accident? without user passwords of course (this part of base can be placed in separate archive and be protected by a pass). Cause any stuff could happen, I don't think it would be a good idea to lost all that knowledge connected to development in KOS and etc.

Maybe you could enable a plug-in so that it has a mobile version? :p

burnerO recommended Tapatalk at Sega-16.com:
Kyle wrote:Have you heard of Tapatalk? It's what we use over at Shoryuken.com and it's very slick. It is a native app for Android, iPhone, Blackberry that makes it very fast to browse forums on a phone. Jump to about 2:30 in this video to see an example of how it works.

The View active topics feature isn't working. I know of another forum having the same problem, so why is that?

Cool news. One quick question though...

Would it be possible to change the thread behavior to display the last (most recent post) page of multi-page threads by default when clicking on the titles?

I noticed that you can't access the main page by simply clicking on

"

The Dreamcast Homebrew Community Online
"

anymore.

Threads from the Quake section aren't showing up in the View active topics page.

The forums have been updated again today. The update was as painless as can be, so the previous maintenance looks like it was definitely a success in keeping the site's database not falling apart.

You can go right to the last post by using this icon on the right: Image

For some reason it doesn't let me use BBCode in the site description anymore, so to do this I'd have to hack the theme.

This should be fixed now. Let me know if it isn't working for you.
