My job grinds my gears sometimes
I like swimming.
He likes swimming.
I don't like swimming.
He doesn't like swimming.
You don't think about it, but then you teach it to a room of kids and wonder why it has to be this way. He like swimming makes perfect sense - why add the fucking s? Then, when they finally get it...oh yeah in negative sentences we don't do that, we change don't to doesn't instead and leave the s off. Zing! Then when they finally wrap their muddled heads around that shit you still get:
He gos to school
He watchs TV
THEN THEN THEN when you finally FINALLY get all that shit laid out...
I might like swimming.
He might like swimming.
Arghhh. Teabag my ass. Fuck you English.
And this is one single little example from hundreds.

I do not

That's why there is an S.
The most effective way to teach this sort of thing is by using a conjugation table, like you'd see in an English-speaking classroom teaching a Romance language. Yes, English breaks a lot of its own rules, and a lot of those rules don't make sense in the first place, but it does seem a lot more orderly once you start putting things into an ordered structure, and compare it to (for example) Spanish or Italian. A lot of the rules and anomalies are similar, particularly when it comes to verb tenses.

Re: My job grinds my gears sometimes
Unfortunately conjugation tables don't work too well when you're 6 years old, and these kids have no experience with any European language. I know how to teach it to them, and I do teach it. I just ponder sometimes how much easier my job would be if language was more efficient. It's not helped by living in China. While the writing system is awful, grammar-wise, Chinese is an incredibly simple language.DaMadFiddler wrote:I do not
