It's certainly my favourite new IP, which surprises me, because generally I dislike scifi.

The thing is, I should have known better too. I've hated every single Bioware game I've ever played, but so many people talked about how amazing this game is that I finally broke down. The story was immediately interesting, and at first I thought I had finally found a Bioware game I could get into. But the gameplay was straight up boring. That first world felt like Gears of War, which I hate games with heavy gunplay. By the time I got back to the ship, I had already seen enough to know that I wasn't going to like it.

Put about 3-4 hours into it back in the day and simply could not get into it at all.

Okay, I didn't realize that Bioware made MDK2, though I'm struggling to remember if I ever picked that up on the Dreamcast or not.

Shiny made MDK, and Bioware made MDK2, which was far superior to the first one. As is discussed in the Wii graphics thread, though, the best version to get is still the Dreamcast. The PS2 version looked kind of washed out, and the Wii version has had several textures and lighting effects stripped out to make it fit into the tight size constraints of the WiiWare system.

As far as new game purchases, I had more thrift store luck today:
- Diddy Kong Racing
- Star Wars: Episode I Racer
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Virtua Tennis 4

World Tour is epic. I really wish more companies would add such things to their sports games.

A 3D version would be nice, but we all know iOS is a place for ports from other systems to sell to idiots like me, so I guess the standard 2D port. The handy thing about the DS version was the second screen, which was great for holding the battle menu options.

To be honest, I could probably just play it through the iPhone SNES emulator, but making menu selections via a virtual d-pad rather than just touching them seems amazingly awkward.
Incidentally, it's available on Virtual Console now. $8 on Wii VC is probably the cheapest (legal) way to get the game, so....

Anyway, I broke down and bought MDK2 for Wii. There are some textures and lighting effects missing, as described earlier, and the audio sounds rather heavily compressed. On the plus side, load times are practically nonexistent, the frame rate is a smooth 60, and the Wii pointer + nunchuk control scheme (the same as most Wii FPS) is the best for this sort of game short of a keyboard and mouse. And I don't have a Dreamcast any more, so this is pretty much the only option.

Bit.Trip Runner. I actually bought it quite a while back, but never got around to it until now. Oh my GOD is that game addictive :o

I think it's my favorite of the Bit.Trip series.

I like Runner, unfortunately I reached a level I just couldn't beat and got tired of being repeatedly sent back to the beginning.

Yeah, it gets tricky in places. But it's just one of those games where once I start playing, I have real trouble putting down the controller. This is only made worse by the fact that it seamlessly transitions from a death into your next try; you don't have to keep pounding "Try Again" or anything like that. It just keeps flowing, without breaking rhythm. This is a retro-style game done right. It really shows off the "art" potential of the pixel art look, it starts with simple, well-established gaming conventions and gradually builds on them as you progress through the game, and it flawlessly distills the platforming genre down to its founding basics and then applies them to a completely different genre. (Like all the Bit.Trip games, Runner is very much a rhythm game in disguise; it has the look and feel of another, earlier genre, and it can take you a while to realize that you're actually playing a music game).

The Witcher 2 - $35 after Kmart gaming coupon.

It's installing right now, but it's going to take me a while just to get through all the content in the freakin' box! Just the standard version of the game comes with a bonus content DVD, the game soundtrack, the full strategy guide for the game, a foldout world map, a story in some antiqued letter and envelope, and papercraft figures of the two main characters. In a world where developers can't even be bothered to include a paper manual for the game, this is an incredible package. I've bought collector's sets that had less content.

LA Noire

Chalked it up as a pretty boring GTA mod at first, but then cases got a bit more interesting and I'm hooked now. I didn't think mixing it up with action sequences worked at first, but it's a great change of pace. Then there's the adult theming...wow. I'm still on the first disc and can already start writing up a list of mature subject-matter that I've never come across in video games before. It's refreshing to finally have a legitimate "no kids" gaming experience.

I just wish the street crime sections were better. "Possible jumper at the methodist church" sounded like a great little diversion. In the end it was just climbing a drainpipe to watch a cut-scene - didn't even need to convince the guy.

The game also seems to be fairly flippant about how acceptable a dead suspect is :?

I want my free games! I haven't played Infamous before and I really want to... When is it supposed to be coming back?

"Any day now" is the word on the street.

And you'll enjoy Infamous, I think. Open-world games tend to have a similarity to them, which Infamous definitely shares... but as far as they go, Infamous is one of the better open-world games out there. And the powers are just fun to play around with.
