Alien vs Predator on DC

Talk about Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, or other DC first person shooting game ports and mods for those games in here.

Alien vs Predator on DC

Post by spinksy »

Hey all

I just read on another forum that AvP (the old PC game) might be possible to port onto Dreamcast. Is this true and if so is anyone in the process of doing it (or know of anyone who is)?

I would pay good money to have this on DC as it's in my top 3 games ever (I'm a big Alien and Predator fan)

Any help is appreciated.....
Dreamcast, it's still thinking.

Sure! If the source code is available, of course... ;)

EDITED-

I went on wikipedia and it said that the source code was publicly released not long ago.

I've downloaded the source code - although I can't say if it's correct but hopefully. Who can do something with this? I'm seriously willing to pay to have this made.

My favorite game on the DC would be awesome!!!

A quick look shows it needs OpenAL for the sound. I did a port of OpenAL to the PSP, so I can probably make one for the DC as well.

It's probably better to work from icculus' linux port: http://icculus.org/avp/

cool, if you could do the sound that would be great!

I've just been reading about the linux port - this kind of stuff is beyond me though (programming etc)

This game would ROCK on DC!!!

Yeah, it looks pretty cool. I've got the Alien demo (which the linux version can be compiled to run), and I bought a copy of AvP Gold Edition for $11 shipped off Amazon that shipped today. If there was a problem, it would be the low amount of memory the DC has (16MB isn't a lot where games like this are concerned). Just have to hope for the best.

(speaking over 2 forums  )

Is there anyway that memory can be expanded? If not would braking the game down into acouple of discs work ok? (or can it not be done like that?)

Honestly that game is awesome, I used to play it online for hours and hours - The single player games were awesome too.

It's not how big a game is in total, it's how much space a level takes when loaded. It doesn't matter is a game has 1000 GB of data if it's only used 5 MB at a time (silly example, but just making a point). Conversely, if a 20 MB game tries to load 20 MB, it's going to need to be altered to work on the DC.

And I don't know of any memory expansions made for the DC. The Saturn had 1MB and 4MB expansion cards, but can't think of anything like that on the DC.

Haven't looked at that yet - I copied over my PSP OpenAL code so I could start on the DC port of that. After that's working, I'll look more at the AvP code to see what else needs to be done.

Actually, maybe I should look it over first. Knowing my luck, it would be like EDuke32 - that "needs" OpenAL too, but all it uses OpenAL for is mixing the audio. All the rest of the audio is done with an assembly language mixer that creates sound effect streams that are mixed with the music using OpenAL. It's really a waste.

Well, a quick look at the code shows that they do indeed use OpenAL for more than just a simple mixer, so that's what I'll be working on first - a DC port.

Got my AvP Gold Ed in the mail today. Funny thing - it won't even start on XP on my system (no matter what compatibility setting it's set for), but I switch over to linux and it runs fine in WINE.

Oh well, I have all the files now. Back to the code.

That's probably because it was designed for Windows 9x systems, ie - Windows 95/98/ME.

@spinsky - Nothing yet... been busy this last week on some code for the Neo Myth (MD flash cart).

@U-said-it - Well, according to the various articles I found via google, most XP users can get it to work. I wasn't able to, but it didn't really matter to me as I don't really care to play it in Windows anyway.
