Is Dream Explorer safe?

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Is Dream Explorer safe?

Post by hey911 »

Hi, I have a questions about this app: http://bswirl.kitsunet.org/vmutool/rele ... en&menu=on

Has anyone here tried this out? Is it safe to use the unlock 44 extra blocks function?

I was primarily interested in converting my Shenmue I NTSC save to work with the Shenmue II PAL version.

I found the Shenmue II save converter here: http://dchelp.net/sbi/, but this Dream Explorer has a ton more options for VMUs.

Again does anybody know anything about this?

I've used the save converter for Shenmue II successfully before. I am unsure about the Dream Explorer, but it does look pretty interesting.

I would like to know the answer to this too.

Of course it is safe, I'd say no app or game makes use of those extra 44 blocks.
I have all mine with the extra blocks ON and nothing bad has happened.
All the games recognise it

I've been using it for years, no problems for me, just like Neoblast.
Yes, it's safe.

I've used it as well and its pretty safe. The only problem i had is a copied an incorrect VMU save from the CD, and when i loaded the game and went to themes it frooze so be careful abount the VMU saves you download to your VMU unit and make sure it is the correct version.

Some games (but not a lot) use it for the filesystem - There is a list somewhere.

I'd like to see that list, because it would break Sega API-rules (not to talk about common sense) to do something with those blocks. Besides using them as normal if you have maked them as not in use of course, but all games suport that AFAIK.

I keep an "archive" VMU with the extra blocks available that I use to back up my main VMU which does not have the extra blocks opened. This way, I'm not actually using the "extra blocks" VMU live with games. Solves any issues before they have a chance to start...
