PSO Questions & Answers

Sylverant is a homebrew open source server for Phantasy Star Online. Dreamcast users still play PSO online with this server even today! This is the official forum for both the online game server as well as the open source project itself. Feel free to post and get a gathering started online! We can also show you how to get connected!

Yes and yes. You should be able to play any Dreamcast version of PSO online with the boot disc.

No, it's because Dreamcast is region coded. The patch disc has a region change built in. So you can play Japan, Europe or United States Version of Phantasy Star Online on your Dreamcast.

I log in to Sylverant with V1 and v2 characters - can you elaborate on how people with whom I have exchanged guildcards are able to find me? e.i., does someone who only has my guild card from a V1 character be able to find when I am playing as a v2?

Simply put, unless you give them both guildcards, they won't. You get two different guildcard numbers when using v1 and v2, as they are based on your serial number and access key (as well as your unique Dreamcast ID).

I was considering adding a feature in the future for potentially dealing with this issue, but I haven't had the chance to plan it out as of yet.

Patch Information:
January 19, 2013:
- Removed the Graphics Fix patch (from November 7, 2009).
Why was it removed?

Because people complained that I was modifying their clients with unofficial patches, even if they did make things look nicer. Either way, if you want the patch, feel free to grab it from Ives' site, as it's still there, obviously.

Yeah, I know Ives hosts it and updates it. The thing is, it doesn't make any sense to do it manually, since its a graphic improvement... and would make the game look better. I even liked the idea of the client updating it. That's a shame, it's not your fault, but you should decide what's best for your server. Just my 2cents.

The updates for the Sil Dragon floor and Cave 1 floor are bug fixes that technically qualify as official content from Sega, but the updates for Pioneer 2, Dark Falz, and ice technically qualify as unofficial skins that happen to look better (in my opinion) than the originals. Some people (myself included) are leery of patch updates that may overwrite your existing files without warning (especially since the patch server can't create backups of your original files), so in the spirit of Sylverant giving people as many options as possible, it makes sense for the patch server not to force anyone to use anything. The main benefit of the patch server now is that it makes it possible to register your serial number and access key with the game, as Sylverant currently has the only functional patch server for PSO PC.

Grafical improvement to you, it was advertised as a fix when it only fixed the sil dragon's floor and the ice transparency, other than that it contained cropped images to make the visual bug less visible.
Switched my ice skin and replaced a few other things, including high res textures on pioneer that i use, didn't like it, requested to be changed.

Some players like cosmetic changes and some don't like it, 1 person opinion saying it looks nicer is not a justification to force it on everyone.
Some fixes actually fix something, as for the other "fixes" (questionable word for a good reason) are merely a cosmetic change.

You can always download it manually and recomend your friends to download them if they like, just don't force them to download and neither advertise it as a fix

Adding transparency to unused portions of an image is not the same thing as cropping it.
