Earlier this month, Indiket ported Sqrxz to Dreamcast.
Sqrxz is the latest project by the team behind Giana's Return: A remake of the 1996 jump 'n run puzzle game for MS-DOS & Windows 9x with the same name. And again, the team was given permission by the original authors!
Features:
Two graphic modes: Classic + Deluxe
You now need to collect all items to open the door at the end of each level, which makes some levels harder than they already were...
I managed to download the PC version and played it for over an hour.
The Graphics are terrible, especially the deluxe cause they turn the insectish Sqrxz into a boxer/kangroo or someshit and it is weird because he doesn't punch and overall the graphics are terrible every character may have a maximum of 2 sprites and it is just plain awful.
The music is terrible as well after an hour of hearing that same awful awful midi, your ears start bleeding and I didn't know how to turn it off. The sound is next to non exsistent.
Even the gameplay isn't perfect, sometimes I've died while jumping on to an enemy, that is supposed to be jumped on.
The overall presentation lacks option, for example did the developers ever think not everyone would want to play it on full screen.
Lastly what counts the most works, the puzzle elements are awesome. Imagine mixing Mario's platforming with Sonic's Speed and turning it into a puzzle game against the clock... AWESOME!
That said, the game would've been better if it was a flash game played on mousebreaker or something.
I remember playing the heck out of this on my TI-85 (a graphing calculator, and my first step into the world of homebrew) when I was in high school. A nice addition to the Dreamcast library.
I have emailed this developer requesting an interview.
I will also be playing all his games.
Sqrxz chiptune still gets annoying after a while though... but since this team has stuck it would this long. I think we should get better acquainted.
