While most gaming websites reported Dreamcast classics Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure would be avaialble for download on X-Box Live Arcade (XBLA) and Playstation Network (PSN) sometime this year. At E3, Sega West President Mike Hayes revealed that these 2 games are part of a much larger Dreamcast Digital Resurrection, "We hope to have somewhere between 18 to 24."

The funny thing here is that Sega planned to do Digital Downloads with Dreamcast 9 Years ago around the time they announced their plans to release 1st Party Sega games on every system. Furthermore their are some Dreamcast games already released for digital download services such as Q Entertainment's Dreamcast Classic "Rez" and BackBone Entertainment used the Dreamcast Version of "Super Street Fighter 2 X Online For Matching Services" for their version of Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix.

To Celebrate the formal resurrection of the system Sega distributed Dreamcast T-Shirts at E3 in exchange for sharing fond memories with the system.

While the Dreamcast did receive significant media coverage at E3, I think it would've been much more impactful if Sega did this last year for the 10th Anniversary, better late then never.

Last Edit: Changed the news post name simply to the name of the event.
Edit#5: Found a better picture of the shirt, Hajime Satomi's son Haruki is wearing it in the attached picture, I don't think I need to post it in the main news but here it is.
Edit#4: I edited the girl out, just got the front shirt I'll post this up.

I posted this around e3 but my pc restarted before the post could be submitted, so I finally got time to post it now.

Chris feel free to make the neccessary edits to my post.
I would also like to apologize for the weird people holding the Dreamast Shirts but I couldn't find pictures of the shirt without them.

Here is the Dreamcast 2001 announcment if anyone knows what the heck happend to it, I am all ears.

Quote:
Sega and Pace announce a joint partnership to create a set-top box that will play Dreamcast games.

Sega and UK-based digital TV technology provider Pace Micro Technology have confirmed that the Dreamcast technology will be integrated into Pace's new line of set-top boxes. The device, which is available to cable, satellite, and xDSL providers, will support Sega's growing library of Dreamcast games. Additionally, the set-top device will include a 40GB hard drive that can be used to download games and have access to them on a pay-per-play basis or for a fixed period of time. The hard drive can also act as a relay device, transmitting game content to wireless handheld devices.

"Our announcement with Sega is a world first," said Andrew Wallace, marketing director for Pace Micro Technology. "Together, Pace and Sega will offer digital broadcasters a valuable new service for their subscribers, as well as an important source of additional revenues. For Sega, integrating games into set-top boxes expands its market potential beyond conventional games consoles. Existing users now have a new way to access games, and new users will be attracted since anyone with the HDD-enabled home gateway box will have access to Sega's own extensive and licensed games portfolio."

"With the advancement of semiconductor and network technologies, set-top boxes, and digital home appliances, the new concept of accessing information from a single device in the living room will become increasingly popular," commented Hideki Sato, representative director and vice president of Sega. "Entertainment content, most of all games, is becoming the most attractive and sought after element in the expansion of the home network."

Both companies will market the Dreamcast-enabled set-top box to digital providers worldwide. Sega plans to make both current content and its library of already-released Dreamcast games available to users of the Pace set-top device. This announcement is another steps in Sega's plans to provide games for multiple formats. In June of last year, the company announced a partnership with Motorola to provide games for wireless phones, pagers, and PDA. Additionally, Sega confirmed last week that it is in negotiations to release games on the Sony PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. Industry speculation further suggests that the company plans to release games on the Microsoft Xbox

That's not really owning one though is it, and you'll never feel like you actually have one :P

It was only ever a prototype than span off from the idea of people browsing the internet and emailing through their TVs via a set-top box as a cheap alternative to owning a PC - something that was all the rage at the time but never really caught on with Joe Public.

The idea that people would download 1GB+ DC games through a satellite dish (yes, really!) via their satellite TV provider was hardly a goer in 2001. I'm pretty sure it died because it was both over-ambitious and expensive. That and Sega killed the Dreamcast a year later and probably already called off their deal with Pace some months before.

Also, as a final little speculation - Pace make most of their money by supplying equipment directly to TV providers, who then give it to their customers. They're not very big players in the direct consumer electronics market. A project like this would almost certainly need backing from a TV provider (and multiple in different countries) - something they probably never got.

This was reported around January 2001 so it was already official that Dreamcast is on it's way out, but I guess it was uneconomical at the time.

When Sega first announced going 3rd Party they planned on supporting PS1 with Saturn ports as well so a lot of things didn't materialize.
