WashingtonDC dreamcast emulator

Post by snickerbockers »

Howdy all,

WashingtonDC (name subject to change) is my pet dreamcast emulator I've been working on for the past couple of years. It only boots three games and none of them have sound because I still haven't made a real AICA implementation, so it's not yet a viable alternative to any of the other DC emulators on the street.

Currently it only supports Linux, although I have gotten it to build on run on Windows via cygwin. I typically get between 40-60 FPS on my ancient AMD FX 8120 circa 2011 so WashingtonDC might actually be able to run at full-speed on newer computers, I'm just too much of a cheapskate to find out.

The source is up on github at https://github.com/washingtondc-emu/washingtondc/ under the terms of GNU GPLv3+. I don't have any plans to ever monetize it or make it closed source because I'm treating this as a hobby project. My plan is to get the AICA+ARM7 working by this fall so that it can be at a usable state in time for Dreamcast's 20th birthday.

Nice! It's great to have a DC emulator being actively worked on.

Its always good to have an alternative. You said it works on Windows via cygwin , I should try it on my AMD apu to see what kind of performance it gets on Windows. Heh you would put a polygon/triangle counter for research/fanboyism lol.

- TwistDC (a Dreamcast version of the popular party game Twister)

- UltraFragDC (a port of the open-source disk defrag program)

- Washington DC (this is just a name I thought was funny, I didn't make a game for this yet)

- DC Charades (press a button on the joypad and a charade will appear on the VMU, then you act it out for everyone else)
Hand meets glove.

My emulator's coming has been foretold in prophecy. This must be how Jesus felt.

Incredible!

I obviously have a gift and will now make predictions for the next 8 years.

- Self-riding bikes will be commonplace. It will be difficult to get served in many fast food restaurants due to the amount of self-driving bikes blocking the doors.

- Samsung will make a TV with such a high resolution that the number of pixels will crush the screen into it's schwarzschild radius and create a blackhole. The resulting explosion will destroy much of Asia, and nobody will be more disappointed about this than darc. He'll write a book about it.

- Sega will launch the Dreamcast Mini Classic. it will cost $79.99 and include Crazy Taxi. It will be impossible to hack and put more good games on as there aren't any more good games.

- Nintendo are going to give up on consoles and become software only. More surprisingly, this software will be a Mario themed mass downloader for PornHub - which Nintendo buy in 2022 for an undisclosed sum.

No, I've only tried it on cygwin and Linux. I don't have any apple machines to test on, and I don't really even know what changes I may or may not need to make to get it ported over to Apple.
