I just paid $35 for one song...

Post by DaMadFiddler »

...admittedly I'm a bit of a record collector, but even to me that's pretty absurd. 78s can get pretty pricy, but I buy them to play on a Victrola (which isn't exactly gentle on the records), so there's no point in laying down big dollars.

So why did a single song cost me 35 bucks? Well, it's a limited edition (very limited--only 50 copies) of a recently-released single...

...on wax cylinder.

So, yeah. We spend money on silly shit sometimes.

Yeah, I'm aware... it's both longer lasting and easier to manufacture that way. Even "wax" cylinders weren't really wax; the compound was more of a metallic soap. The advantage was that you could shave the outer layer off the cylinder and re-record it at home, but the disadvantages were that (1) the soft material was prone to damage and (2) it was also prone to mold, which destroyed the grooves. But by the mid-1910s, they'd switched to celluloid for the same reason these new ones are made out of modern plastics.

Here's the company that produced the cylinders:

Also, while I don't particularly care for this song, I did find the whole thing amusing:

Yes, that's a death metal song, also released on cylinder.

I'm happily amazed, shocked and disappointed by the modern world.
