Dastardly Dungeon

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Dastardly Dungeon

Post by DCDayDreamer »

Another small novelty release from DC Evolution...

Dastardly Dungeon was an entry in the PDRoms 3.666 Competition, the game took second place. I couldn't find a page for the competition anywhere but you can read all about it in this DCEmulation forum post from March 2007. This is another game created by Ruckage, developed with Fenix for the GP2X console, it's in the 'Game and Watch' style, resembling a one-screen LCD handheld game.

The objective of the game is to escape from the dungeon, a compass in the bottom corner of the screen points you towards the key for a locked exit door, once you have retrieved the key, the compass will then point you towards the exit. During your quest there are diamonds to collect for points, a counter on the right of the screen indicates how many diamonds are hidden within each level of the dungeon.

You have three lives for each game, the dungeon is full of vampire bats and spiders, and if you touch one of them you lose a life, the game ends if you lose all of your lives or if you unlock the exit. The game has 4 different maze sizes to choose from, with 40,000 randomly generated levels available (10,000 for each maze size), there is also an option to pick a specific level to play or have the game randomly choose one for you.

This release comprises of DCEvo's version of Chui's Fenix SDL Loader (FSL) from November 2004, edited to exclude the Fenix splash screen and jingle, so Dastardly Dungeon loads directly. The Dreamcast Fenix port is not mapped for the L and R buttons on the GP2X, Dastardly Dungeon has been edited so the X and B buttons on the Dreamcast controller now function as L and R, so all options for the game are now available on Dreamcast.

Controls:
Start - Skip Intro Sprite Screens
X/B - Choose 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, or 6x6 Maze
Y - Choose Random or Pick Level Option
D-Pad L/R/U/D - Input the Level Number (Pick Level Option)
Start - Start Game
D-Pad - Move Character

An archive page has already been created at DCEvo, the CDI, plainfiles, and original GP2X version of the game are available for download. Alternatively, I've attached a standard CDI of the game below.

Enjoy!

Wow, this is awesome DC, 40,000 levels may take a while!
