Boomshine2X

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Boomshine2X

Post by DCDayDreamer »

Here's another small release from DC Evolution, once again it's a game created with Fenix for GP2X and now adapted for the Dreamcast.

Boomshine2X is an authorized clone of the popular flash game Boomshine created by Danny Miller, the game was developed with Fenix by Sam Fisher and became an entry in the GBAX 2007 Coding Competition, the game was also chosen by GamePark Holdings to become a built in game for the commercial release of their GP2X Wiz handheld console.

The game has twelve levels, and the difficulty increases slightly with every level. Each level consists of a specific number of balls bouncing round the screen, the objective of the game is to set off an explosion by detonating the cursor, this will cause a chain reaction of explosions as each ball that comes into contact with the initial blast sets off a series of detonations. A set number of balls must be detonated in order to advance to the next level, as the levels progress the number of balls to be detonated increases.

This release comprises of DCEvo's version of Chui's Fenix SDL Loader (FSL) from November 2004, edited to exclude the Fenix splash screen and jingle, so Boomshine2X loads directly. The Dreamcast Fenix port does not have support for music in the OGG format, the soundtrack for the game (a two minute infinitely looping tune) has been excluded from the release.

Sam Fisher continued development of the game, with V1.12 being the final version of Boomshine2x, V1.12 is currently incompatible with the Dreamcast Fenix port, the GBAX 2007 version is used with a custom background image replacing the black background from the original GP2X release, the GBAX splash screen has also been replaced with the menu screen from the game. The WAV sound effects have been balanced for volume, you are now less likely to jump out of your skin and damage your speakers if you reach 'Boomshine' (detonate every ball in a level).
