How is it supposed to work if there's no current running through the diodes ? (and there won't if you wire both pins to 3,3V).
Do as your brains thinks, hook the longer pin to the 3,3V and the shorter to gnd.

I think he forgot to tell about grounding the diodes, but was talking of 2 diodes, so 2 wires go to 3,3V
