Noob needs Help

Anything DreamSNES-related can be asked in this forum, such as general questions about the emulator, how to burn it, etc.

Noob needs Help

Post by zero_cool »

Hi there,
I am new to dreamcast, and I really would like to get snes games to play on it.
I can burn dc games ok, but whenever I put in the snes cd in it comes up as an Audio Cd and saying when I select play to insert a game disk.
I used several guides and followed them to the detail.
What I have done is I copied the contents of dreamsnes-0.9.8/cd to the disc, added at the same time unzipped rom files to the ROM directory and selected burn. now on the disc I have following folders:
gfx
locale
roms
sound
0GDTEX.PVR
1DSNES.SH4
CHANGES
LICENSE
README

Can someone help a dummy like myself out in getting this to work? am gone through 8 CD's so far and loosing it slowly but surely.

Thanks in Advance

Best,
zero

Its missing the ip.bin file and 1st_read.bin files, without those two it will not boot into dreamsnes. Check the dreamsnes archive for those 2 files before the next burn, and if you need to, redo the layout that will be the disc. ALso, when you burn the disc, what type of burn are you using? Most emulators require the disc to be burnt as a multisession CDROM XA.

I.M. Weasel-
Those clever guys named the boot bin as "1DSNES.SH4", rather than 1st_read.bin.

zero_cool-
You can not simply burn the files to disc and expect the cd to boot on the Dreamcast.

There is a lot of info you search the net, but basically for a disc to "auto-boot" on dc, you need to create the disc a special way.
The disc must contain 2 sessions, and the beginning sectors of the 2nd session must contain the IP.BIN.

Take a look at the DSNES official page, there are instructions for installations...

If your still confused, I can post the tools I use to build a .CDi for selfboot on dc.

Thank you all for your help,
I now tried it with this guide:
http://www.dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewto ... 30&t=68460

I followed it, now dc is in a boot loop.

Ph3nom can you post the files I need if possible?
I usually burn with cdburnexp or power iso or imgburn.

@ I.M. Weasel I found the ip.bin, but am unable to locate 1st_read.bin

Thank you again for all your help

I was wrong, it has the file "1DSNES.SH4", instead of "1st_read.bin". They do the same thing in this case.

the ip.bin should be included in dreamsnes package, do not use any ip.bin file that did not originally come with a different emulator.

When you mean boot loop, do you mean it resets after doing the dreamcast swirlie thing, or after the white sega liscensing screen?

Here is a simplified version of the script I wrote to create a "self-boot" disc for DC, assuming you use windows.
All you need to do is place your files into the /data/ directory.
Place the IP.BIN into the main directory.
Run CDI4DC_kos.bat, and you should end up with a .CDi that is ready to be burned to disk using your favorite image burning program...
