Want a coder's cable (DC serial to DB9) ?

If you have any questions on programming, this is the place to ask them, whether you're a newbie or an experienced programmer. Discussion on programming in general is also welcome. We will help you with programming homework, but we will not do your work for you! Any porting requests must be made in Developmental Ideas.

Posted this on Dreamcast Junkyard so perhaps you'll get some people to bite on this offer.
It's thinking...

Thanks. its a little outdated with a db9 port, but its a cool thing to have. but it pair-down time (and reality time) - im never going to program directly for dc.

There's an even easier (and cheaper) way to do it these days... Just get a USB->3.3v serial breakout board (like this one, which is actually one of the more expensive (but well supported) ones out there) and wire it up internally. It'll cost less than $10, and it's USB, which is more likely to be available on your PC than an RS232 serial port anyway. Also, generally these little boards can use much higher bitrates (usually up to 500kbit/s or even 1.5mbit/s) versus the 112kbit/s max you get usually from an RS232 serial port.

Just make sure that whatever breakout board you get supports using RTS/CTS signaling, and you should be fine.

I'll try to make one for me with the adafruit usb->serial. Can we buying serial cable somewhere or do I need to cut from existing object like sdcard reader ?

I'm talking about the serial port of the dreamcast, not the rs232 :-)

I think BlueCrab means that solder the board internally and not actually create a plug for the serial port. Man... I wish I could solder and know its ins and outs.

Most of the SD card readers just use pins from something else with the same spacing, and then put some plastic in there to make sure that they make good contact when put in the console.

Unfortunately, there's not a good place to source the real plugs from, so you either have to find something to take a connector off of, or you have to solder to the motherboard of the Dreamcast. :?

Is there any tutorial around on how to wire it up internally?
