i'm not sure how they are so rare, the hardest part i think to the whole process is the DC Serial connector, and it seems that the producers of the SD Adapters found away around that... and with sites like batchPCB, it's easy to make a simple PCB for the coders cable and buy the parts... the program won't shut off when the eject button is pressed prematurely ... it sits there ... so a "Insert Disc and Press Start" method should work... (you can probably do a test for the correct files)
