Re: Dreamcast Media Center

Have you tried 320x480 or 352x480? Some of the videos I used to test my player used a similar resolution and they looked a lot better than 320x240 videos. I don't remember if they player will play those back full speed or not, but it might be worth testing a short clip. Yeah, I now do remember that...

Re: Dreamcast Media Center

This is great! but what we would really need for homebrew projects would be a player that can handle 640x480, which codec or which audio format doesn't matter. So if there's a way to get DC to play uncompressed video and audio at 640x480 than that would be a real killer app used in many future comm...

Re: Problem using Selfboot Inducer

You can't just zip an emulator and rename the *.zip to *.sbi. Selfboot Inducer does use the zip format for the packages, but the files inside the zipped archive need to be arranged in a specific way, and there are xml files (named with a .dxl extension) that contain information about the Dreamcast p...

Re: Issues compiling a sdl program on KOS

I haven't done any DC coding in a few years but if I recall correctly, SDL_Image didn't require any special trickery to work with KOS as it relies on SDL to handle the platform-specific stuff. Basically just create a new makefile for it based on the makefile for another library in the kos-ports tree...

Re: Game Development - Where to start?

The reason I don't want to learn from any free tutorial is because those people does not get paid for what they do. People that writes books and earns money on it, will put more effort in it which makes the quality way better! That's not necessarily true. Just because you're getting paid to do some...

Re: my game for dreamcast Help

I'm sure nobody means to discourage you, but we're just pointing out the facts. But look at it a different way. You were offered a pretty decent suggestion when LyonHurt said to check out Beats of Rage. You made a game once. I bet if you play with that engine a bit, you'll be able to make a great ga...

Re: my game for dreamcast Help

Sorry you don't like the answers given above, but you can't just "convert" a game to make it work on the Dreamcast. If it were that simple, a lot more people would be doing it.

Re: pvr_txr_load question

This is essentially what I did in VC/DC. I made some changes so it would be obvious what everything is, so if it doesn't work it's probably because I made a typo when I posted it here. It's basically the sq_cpy function from KOS (found in kernel/arch/dreamcast/hardware/sq.c) except it will let you a...

Re: Yeti3D demo with PVR rendering.

Are you going to make it work? If I do, it will be when I get curious enough to really look at the code and see how it works. Right now, I'm 34 years old with a full-time job and a pretty active social life. I'm sure I will one day do some more coding, and I always liked hacking on Yeti3D and on pr...

Re: Yeti3D demo with PVR rendering.

When I did my port, I used the most recent version of Yeti3D that I could get. I had seen the Pro version demos but it wasn't open source at the time. That's why those maps aren't compatible with my Dreamcast port.

As for adding sound and music, that wasn't really the purpose of the demo.

Re: New here with developmental questions

1. Would this be a completely major rewite or is fenix closely related to SDL? It would be a complete rewrite. You would need to rewrite the program in C. SDL is simply a cross-platform sound and graphics library. I did find SDL to be fairly straight-forward when I was initially trying to create a ...

Belated congrats, dude. Kids are awesome, especially when they're little and figure out shit that you don't expect them to. I don't have any of my own, but my ex-girlfriend's kid used to surprise the shit out of me all the time. Plus he liked to rock out to Zeppelin with me when mommy was at work.

Re: Thread-Safe CD-Rom Access????

I would look at how DCDivX handles parsing the AVI file, because it uses a fairly large buffer. I'm sure the source code is still available. It had some sort of a buffering system that seemed to work pretty well.

Re: Thread-Safe CD-Rom Access????

I'd copy the data you want from the CD into RAM and then let the audio and video threads handle it from there. I believe that's what DCDivX did, and that's what I did with VC/DC. One thing that I was going to try with VC/DC that I don't think I ever got around to was reading ahead in a separate thre...

Re: So I've got off the ground.

You'll want to burn DemoMeno or DCHakker to a selfbooting disc all by itself using whatever method you normally use to make a selfbooting disc. I always used DemoMenu. This is the disc you'll put in your Dreamcast when you turn it on. Once it loads up, you will swap in your multi-session disc with t...
